Why aren't pros using BB&F Ferrules?

Has nothing to do with BB&F...pros just dont care. They get new iron sets every few months if they want - why would they customize them like that?

I think some pros don’t even know what a ferrule is. Most here would be surprised about the number of pros that know next to nothing about equipment.

I bet half of the touring pros have no clue what color their ferrules are let alone know who made them.  To them it's just a piece of plastic at the top of the hosel for atheistic purposes.

It’s kind of shocking how little some pros know about equipment. Some are tinkerers and equipment junkies like us, but some just want to be given what works and that’s about it.

Remember when (I think it was Tiger, it might have been Phil) had a wedge without a ferrule on a WITB shot like 12 years ago?  The internet went bonkers and there were people ripping their ferrules off thinking there was some sort of magic sauce in that recipe.  It's literally for a more seamless transition from hosel to shaft, it does nothing other than that.

I also find the coloured ferrules ugly as sin, but hey, each their own.  If you want to waste an extra $50 for something nobody is going to notice or care about, by all means.

And unless you do can do your own work, you have to pay to have all the shafts removed and then put back on. It’s not just some simple process.

That bbfco inspiration thread is a clown show, some ugly dang ferrules that folks think are beautiful??? It's a head scratcher for sure. Having said that, I'm going to throw these ferrules on when I reshaft my irons with mmt's.  But I would consider these pretty tasteful with the black mmt shafts. Everyone is different tho.

I think the biggest reason they're not using them is those ferrules are not available from the OEMs paying them to use the equipment. The OEMs want them using equipment that looks like the retail product. Like they used to say in racing, what wins on Sunday, sells on Monday. Secondarily, I agree with all the takes they are ugly but that's my own opinion.

Personally, I just don't get the custom ferrule thing.  Guess if you like them go for it, for me, I'd rather spend the money on golf balls or bourbon, something like that.

That’s so true…I have a friend that plays on the PGA Tour and we usually play once a year and when I dive into his bag he just chuckles. He really doesn’t know anything about his equipment other than what works and doesn’t work for him.

Pretty common among most athletes Id imagine. Ask a NHL guy what stick he uses, the specs, technology... They have no clue. They just know what feels right and what gives them the best performance.

Other than a few head cases, most of us here probably are more into our gear than pros are into theirs.

1) They're not getting paid to use them.

2) They don't care.

3) They're not getting paid to use them.

Many years ago I raced rally cars at a fairly high level (professionally).  Many of the drivers I raced with knew a lot about cars, some knew exactly one thing - how to make the car go fast.  They literally didn't know a thing about how cars work.  And even for those of us who were car nuts, a question like, "Did you prefer the 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer or the 2004 Subaru Impreza?" doesn't make a ton of sense - you drive what you drive because it's your job.  Your favorite car ever is the car you're driving at the moment.  It's like asking an accountant whether he prefers a Dell or HP laptop.  They both get the job done.

Different topic, but I also feel very similarly about people who have different coloured grips for the different coloured shafts they have.  It triggers memories of working big box retail when someone would come in for a set of New Decades and spend 40 minutes trying to decide on the colours that would look best with this shaft or that, or what would pair best with their bag.  Give me a break.  🙃
