Hands relative to center of chest on downswing

Recommended Posts

It’s common wisdom on here that you need to make sure the hands and club get off the chest and aren’t racing behind the body on the downswing.  This makes sense to me.

Often the P6 position and the gap between the forearm and thigh is referenced.  It seems to me that casting affects the relative P6 position for each player too much for this to be a great starting point.  If you cast, there’s no way for that gap not to exist by P6 because P6 comes earlier than it should.

At what point should the hands be in front of the exact center of the chest? For most pros it looks like they get there between P5 and P6. For guys like DJ it’s almost not until impact.

And is that a good measuring point of arms and hands not improperly  trailing the body for someone with a bad cast?

The hands stay on the trail side of the body until after impact according to GEARS, mentioned in a few AMG videos.

Hmm glad to know because I’ve found the new arm lowering drill is great for shallowing but makes it more difficult to get arms out in front and I’ve been using Rose as a model.  He looks to have his hands directly in front of center of chest before P6

He does not, though. Look at where his chest is actually pointing.

Older video but this one shows your question directly

This pro gets the hands to chest relationship about equal to the address right around impact.

The cast happens because the arms/hands are behind, not the other way around.

Thanks.

It’s interesting that the angle doesn’t start to expand until about P5

Correct, but your intent has to be much sooner if it’s expanding late.

Yes I agree, among other issues that may be causing it.

But using P6 to measure how far the arms and hands are behind for someone who casts is a self fulfilling prophecy.

There should be a way to measure independent of club position

Monte, as a serial offender of having a gap between my hands and my right thigh,  is the key to getting them  in front of the thigh by moving the arms quicker in transition? Would a feel be to have them move before anything else in the downswing? I have tried virtually everything. I just recently purchased and  watched your no cast video, your efficient swing video and probably every video AMG has put out yet here I am searching for answers. Frustrating at times.

That’s one feel that works and it’s a hard habit to break.  The Justin rose feel is another good one

I would be willing to bet that your backswing is making what you’re trying to do very difficult
