Best insect repellant

Hi All.

 

Just come back from holiday and got tortured with insect bites. Still itching days after coming home. What do fellow Wrx members use to keep the beasties away?

@elwhippy Isn't 30%(?) DEET = still considered by military, as the most effective repellant?

 

But experienced folks will say "don't apply DEET onto your skin" (to avoid chemical burns/ irritation)

... better to apply the DEET on your clothing/ near where insects attracted (e.g. collar; hat brim; sides on your spectacles/eyeglasses)

Vicotrias Secret Amber Romance or Vanilla Something or other...dont laugh...I Used to coach girls high school golf and one of them heard to try it and it worked very well (we get nasty gnats down here in south MS). You're gonna smell like a stripper after you put it on, but it keeps them away.

I had read about that and tried it on a trip we go to play where the gnats are nasty

 

didnt Do anything to stop them and I smelled exactly like I had spent all night in a trashy strip club. 

 

I’ve read absorbine jr works so I’m trying it next.

As an avid hunter I stumbled onto picaridin years ago. Great stuff. It does need to be applied a little more often than deet but it is less caustic to the skin and is quite effective. Most importantly, it doesn’t damage some plastics and finishes as can DEET. I’m not familiar with the ranger ready brand, but Sawyers also makes a couple of good options, though not completely scent-free. I’ve found that it is important to go with the 20% formula. The 10 & 15% Picaridin options I’ve used in the past were notably less effective. I’ll have to give the RR a try.

Crazy it didn't work for you, some of the kids on the guys team kept some in their bag and used it and worked. I was always worried of heading home to gf after practice and her wondering like I smelled like a stripper and trying to explain my way out of it.

 

Have tried some from various pro shops that worked well as well, couldn't tell you the name of them it seems every shop has a different brand. Had a couple brands that when I sprayed my face, my lips went numb for an hour or so.

DEET is very effective.

 

I trap mosquitoes by leaving a water in a watering can and emptying it every day.

I got rid of nasty Tiger mosquitoes by trapping them in the watering can.

 I doubt they died out on their own and it is impractical to remove all the breeding grounds in the neighbor's yards.

Dude, total joke. I've used deep woods off in central america for years. Try to avoid it these days just because of skin irritation and the fact that it ruins some plastics and coatings.

It depends on what country you are in.  In Canada, 30% Deet is the legal maximum.  In the States you can find Deet that goes up to 100%.  At 100%, all you need is a few drops and smoosh it around.

 

I wish I could get more than 30% here because it really doesn't deter black flies or sand flies at that level.  Might have to go to eBay and buy some stronger stuff.

 

Deet is death to rubber grips and plastics.  Wash your hands if you use them to rub the spray around.

Precisely why I started using 20% Picaridin-based products. I've ruined auto, golf, archery and fishing equipment with DEET. Don't get me wrong, it's GREAT stuff; I'm simply not always attentive enough to remember that I have deet on my hands when grabbing something.

Got a tip from a local in TN to keep gnats away.  Put a dryer sheet inside the brim of your hat.
