Srixon ZX4 vs ZX4 MK II=difference aside from cosmetics

Years ago I played the 545s and still consider them one of the very best of the some 50 sets I have owned since 1975. Have demoed the zx4 MKII a few times and thier very nice however I never hit them next to the previous ZX4. Frankly the profile of the ZX4 prevented me from giving them a fair shake. Some great deals on the older ZX4 and am looking for a second set of irons being I like two sets for a few reasons. Seems some of the feedback ,even from some Srixon people,is the performance between the two is nil. Can anyone comment who have played both or at least hit both enough to offer opinions. Thanks in advance.

Personally I found the ZX4 MkII to be lower launching than the ZX4. I was caught off guard how boring of a trajectory shots with the ZX4 MkII came off as I was expecting them to shoot straight up in the air.

Interesting observation. Where the shafts simliar if not same? Did you have a preference and can you speak to distance and forgiveness if possible? Thanks for initial reply, good stuff.

Shafts were similar, I think the ZX4 had the Nippon 950GH Neo and the ZX4 MkII has the KBS Tour Lite, so both higher launching and around 100g in stiff. Both irons are going to be very close in terms of forgiveness and keep the ball online very well. I would think that dispersion between the two, it hit side-by-side, would be similar. I hit the new ZX4 MkII father but some of that can be attributed to the flatter flight, where the original went higher and landed softer. If fit into either one I bet they would be within a few yards.

I just got my ZX4 MKII's and will put them into play for the first time tomorrow if the rain lets up.  Can't imagine how similar the two would be when they don't even look remotely similar.  However, I've never hit the first gen so there is that.  I have a set of WIlson Staff blades and CB's and ordered the ZX4's to have a club that gives me some help.  They look decent at address, not as chunky and moderate offset compared to most irons in their category.

New owner of the original ZX4’s as of this week. I have not played the Mk II version of the ZX4. I did a bunch of research and decided that the new version is pretty much down to looks based on all the videos and reviews I read.  Plus, this is a band aid fix for me. So, this became what fits the budget and my current needs.

My gamers are Callaway Epic (2017) with Recoil ES 780 F4. I injured my elbow in early January and had not touched a club until 2 weeks ago. After 2 rounds the past 2 weeks I knew I had to make a temporary change due to my lack of swing speed. So, I wanted the same model shaft, but in the 760 F3. I found a great deal on a new set of the original ZX4’s. I received them Tuesday and played them today. These went straight in the bag and no range time today. I will say they are a bit chunky compared to my current set, but are a very nice set to play. These provide enough forgiveness/distance and they are a perfect fit until I get fully back. My yardages were pretty much identical to my current set. I was able to hit the 7 iron 170 yards today and hold the green within a few paces of my pitch mark. I saw this throughout the set going into the greens. I have the 5-AW, but only I carried the 6-PW to blend in with the top/bottom of my bag. This is just my experience with the original’s. I do not think you can go wrong with either, but if you want a slimmer version then go with Mk II.

Driver: Paradym Std 10.5*-Tour AD XC 6s

Wedges: Callaway Jaws MD5 48*S, Jaws MD4 52*S and Jaws Raw Full Toe 58/10

Putter: Toulon Garage Atlanta DB Stroke Lab 34"

Ball: Srixon Z-Star Diamond

Honorable Mention: Paradym Std 3HL (16.5*) - GD Tour AD IZ 7s

I also have the mkii zx4. Never considered the original due to the looks. If you don’t care about that, I’d actually expect the originals to be easier to hit and get up in air because of additional bulk. It is hard for me to imagine them being able to slim them down that much with zero difference in performance. More bulk typically means easier to get up in the air and more forgiveness, all else being equal. But, i haven’t hit the Mki, so all speculation by me. Regardless, performance wise, i read nothing but positives about the originals.

Hi all, I'm just about to purchase a new set of ZX4

Srixon Irons. I'm coming from a 18 year old set of Taylor made semi blades. I'm a 10 handicap and my personal goal is to lower this a little by September, playing to it on a consistent basis. I tend to hit my irons rather straight, not necessarily with draw or fade, though if anything with a slight draw. So I am semi low to mid handicap, I don't take massive divots, and yet if my game improves I don't want to be looking at changing set again in two or three years. Should I go for the ZX4 Mii or even the muizuno hot metal 923 pro?

I tested both clubs and have been leaning towards the ZX4. I will welcome any comments to make sure I am making a correct choice.

Both are very good and you won’t be disappointed with either one. The zx4 mkii is very forgiving and workable. When I saw them back in September of last year I knew I wanted a set before I even got to test. Feel is great and not like other forged face hollow head irons. The look is also great. Hope this helps
