Long end of bag

StarFleetGolfer

Recommended Posts

I go with wedges, irons, then two hybrids then skip straight to driver. As a low clubhead speed, short hitter there's just not much extra distance potential in it for me if I try to squeeze in a fairway wood beyond my strongest hybrid.

Maybe a simpler way to put it is, I've never found any club that goes farther hitting off the turf than my 3h while still being easy to hit straight. Don't really like carrying clubs that are hard to hit straight.

16.5* 3HL then a 22* 5 iron for me.  I hit irons really well so my fitter saw no reason to fit me for hybrids.

I can hit either off the deck despite a very low swing speed.

I discovered that my swing allows me to work the ball both ways.  Either a draw that rolls or a fade that sits.  Or a slice around the trees.

While it would be nice to get more distance, being able to have that sort of control is even better.

4W, 7W, 4i.

No hybrids - not enough control with them.

I don’t understand the numbering system with fairways and hybrids anymore, so I just refer to them by loft.

Right now I have a 15* fairway, a 19* hybrid, and a 24* hybrid, with a 6 iron as my next longest club after that.  (Twelve clubs total in my bag, not really sure where I’d put the other two.)

Definitely the easiest and most transparent way of doing things.

I’ve got 3w, 5w, then 3 and 4 iron. Dropped the gap wedge for a 3i.

It's in my signature:

  • Driver - TSi3 at 9 degrees, Tensei 1K Black 65TX
  • 2 iron - Titleist T200 (17 degrees), Tensei AV Raw White 100X
  • 3 iron - Titleist T200 (20 degrees), KBS Tour 130X
  • 4 iron - Titleist T100S (22 degrees), KBS Tour 130X
  • 5 iron - Titleist T100S (25 degrees), KBS Tour 130X

I am allergic to wide soles and haven't played a fairway wood in a very long time - hybrids are almost as problematic. I am loving the utility iron idea 'cause I don't seem to have much of a problem with them. I don't use the 2 iron much from the fairway but it's dynamite off the tee, and the 3 iron is more consistent from the fairway. The gapping kind of works on paper but works really well for how I like to play golf.

Not a lot of other info to go off, but FWIW, I go 4W (220 carry), 3H (205 carry), 4i (190 carry).  Those are for solid strikes. Obviously the solid strike percentage is lower at that end of the bag than down low but the gaps work for me.

Like others said 5i and 3W is a huge gap and two completely different clubs / use cases. I’m curious what else you have in the bag?

My bag (I’m a Titleist whore):

Driver: TSi2 8.25°

4W: TSi2 16.5°

3 Utility Iron: T200U Graphite Shaft, 19°

4i: T200 22°

5i-9i: T100•S (standard lofts, 25°-40°)

PW: T100•S bent to 45°

Wedges: Vokey SM9s, 50°, 56°, 60°

I kind of regret my wedge gapping but am going to rock it from now. In a year or two I’ll probably bend the PW back to 44° and then go 49, 54, 59.

Today 2023 (see sig line):

As for you, go with best mix of {what you like + what you can hit.}

  • If you have higher clubhead-speed, consider a 2H + 4H bridge.
  • If you handle your 3W well, and like fairways, add a 5W + 7W.
  • If you want max flexibility, add a 7W (high and soft) and a driving iron (low and hot). With this combo, 7W helps you get out of shaggy trouble, while driving iron helps you avoid shaggy trouble.

Driver, 2w (TSR2+), 16.5* FW, 19*H, 22*H.  6i is the next club in my bag.

4W and 22*H launch high.  19*H is more penetrating to say out of the wind or for running punch outs.

TSR2+ is a recent addition.  Because I'm a ho.   And I've found some use for it on tight par-4s in windy conditions.  When rain season comes and the fairways turn soft, I'll take it out in favor of an additional wedge.

I'd take a look at the sigs in these forums to get a few ideas. There's lots of ways to build a bag and with gapping/tee shots that 3w might even be replaced.

But after 3W, I'd look at something that can elevate the ball consistently whether it's fairways (5w/7w) or hybrids (3H/5H).  Unless you have quite a bit of speed along with control, long irons (2i-4i) are probably not the best fit for what you need.  It can be a rabbit hole, so keep it simple by testing a lot of gear first and then get a proper fitting once you have an idea of what you need.

Next is giving me trouble.  Been playing an 18* hybrid and it’s not my favorite.  Prob going back to a utility 3i.  After that is my set 4i, but I’m thinking of going to a more forgiving 4i to replace it.
