Looking for input on low bounce wedges

A little background… A course I play locally is sort of a dog track/cow pasture, but they host some decent events throughout the year. The course is old, not a sprinker head on the property, and they never aerate. So by mid summer it is basically rock hard, to the point where even a digger isn’t going to make a divot. Playing in a match play event there last year I got hamstrung on a few short pitches that needed to be elevated because I couldn’t open the face enough and still get the leading edge down.

The same event is coming up again in a few weeks and I was out yesterday getting a round in. Found a similar situation as to last year on 17 where I had a short sided pitch over a bunker and just couldn’t hit the type of shot that was needed because of the rock hard turf. So that got me thinking about a potential equipment change for this course…

I currently play a Vokey 60* M grind and have for years. Have found them to be very versatile. But I was thinking of looking at something really low bounce for rounds here and I was curious what peoples experience is with the them on extremely firm conditions.

I appreciate any insights and suggestions on models to look at!!

Vokey has two very low bounce options- the L and T grinds- which are both worth looking at. The L grind has a wider, flatter sole, which means when you open it up, the leading edge will come off the ground some. The T grind alleviates some of this by taking some metal off the back and thinning the sole, letting you open the face up, but will dig if you get on softer conditions- you need to be very precise in your delivery.

Find a Cleveland 588 64* wedge. It will allow you to get the height you need on pitches without the need to open the face of a 60*. It also has a pretty thin sole so works well off firm conditions. I would jump all over this one……

I have a similar course here. It isn't really grass out there so much as green rock in parts. Some great runout on drivers though.

I use a 58⁰ low bounce rtx6. And I'm fine with it. But I carry one extra ugly club in my bag thst slots in bt the 53⁰ sand wedge and the aforementioned lob wedge.

It's a 56⁰ Cleveland CBX. A few years old. I use it from every screwy lie. I don't know exactly what they do to it, but despite it not being low bounce, it works on bare lies, and it's very forgiving.

I think I could hit it off of concrete if necessary. And they're cheap. Especially a few years old gently used. Good luck.

Any of the ping wedges with the eye 2 sole might be worth finding.  Slightly open you have bounce slightly closed you have a dig. If your swing is a tad deep you might not like it much.

Good luck in your matches.

How are they spin wise for you? I have one buddy that has one and he has said it doesn’t seem to spin as much as some of his other wedges. Just curious if others have seen that as well

I’ve got a new SB 56 and it spins great to me. No complaints whatsoever. I use a Callaway CS or close in comparison FWIW.

I play a SM9 M-grind 58'/8' wedge.  It handles any hard-pan situation I encounter, and I encounter that often when playing muni's.  Making 8' bounce work is more about technique than the wedge specs, itself.

When I took up the game, I was fortunate to have a PGA pro introduce me to progressive 2-5' low-bounce wedges, which necessitated opening the face angle to create various degrees of bounce when more bounce was needed.  Going to a lower bounce wedge, like 4', requires a lot of practice and even more at opening the face to add bounce.
