Charles Schwab Challenge 2023

Following on from last weeks PGA, it is hard to believe that we are half way through major season and the business end of the year is very nearly upon us. The race to the end of the season continues this week as the PGA Tour heads to Colonial for the 2023 Charles Schwab Challenge. Whilst the event has not been bestowed with the riches of being a designated event, the field is stronger than we have become accustomed to in one of these "off" weeks and that added to the old school familiarity that Colonial Country Club provides should make for an interesting week as guys look to get a bump up in the absence of some of their better known peers.

Scheffler is the clear favorite at 4/1 odds. He can't putt at all but his ballstriking is unreal and should suit Colonial.

 

I say Scheffler wins in comfortable fashion, picking up his 3rd win of the season

Lets see how it goes, but some of the non designated events have actually been really good to watch this year. There is so much incentive for next year, it seems to be pushing some of the guys on.

Main interest for me is seeing how Block does after his dream week last week. Can't help thinking he won't have too much left in the tank and sadly may miss the cut - would love to be proved wrong though.

Love this course.  Such great history with Marvin Leonard, Ben Hogan, and the USGA.  Early on, a goal was to host the U.S. Open.  The club hosted the 1941 U.S. Open, won by 1941 Masters Champion Craig Wood.  Colonial has also hosted the 1975 Tournament Players Championship (The PLAYERS Championship) and the 1991 U.S. Women's Open.

 

A par-70, at just over 7,209, it is unfortunately about 600 yards short from hosting another major.  But...is there a "better" men's championship course in Texas?

 

On my bucket list for sure.  So much history and nuance out there!

Again, I put $10 on Morikawa because I am a fan. 16:1 is probably too expensive now, but it is a shorter course.  He hasn't played well. 

Hope Michael Block makes the cut but I would give his chance at 25%.

I love the Colonial because it was just different from the Nelson, and in the decade i lived in DFW i was able to go there and also the Trophy Club just up the road in Roanoke...I got to tag along as a Go Fer for a couple of well known Hogan staffers....but my fondest memory of Colonial was my ATF golfer Tom Watson hitting a miraculous shot out of a fairway bunker to win in  88 with my buddy the late  Bruce Edwards on his bag

non designated events tend to have more action at the end while the  thursday-friday play tends to be meh.

Colonial, the the most Pinehursty gloomy of the regular PGA stops since Firestone happily was terminated. Pretty decent field though.

Was afraid Oak Hill was going to be one of the gloomies too, but the Fangorns wasnt looming all over the fairways. To end with three pretty pinehursty ones was a bit boring, one would have liked swapping 16/17 with 14/15. But a pleasant surprise. I'll keep it in mind until next time a Major is played there in a decade or so.

God the hubris of the oddsmakers after round one Scheffler is still +320. That's actually worse odds than the +350 he opened at and he's 5 back to the leader and a couple back to some good players.
