Driving irons and Hybrids

AC810

Recommended Posts

I've been using a single hybrid (19 degree) to fill a gap between driver and 4 iron. I definitely like the versatility with a hybrid but don't always feel as comfortable with a hybrid versus an iron. I recently bought a used PXG driving iron to mess around with and used it a few times off the tee during my last round and was really enjoying it. Felt like I was much more accurate off the tee than a hybrid but definitely not getting the same height, which isn't surprising. So my question is, is it weird to add a 2 iron in the bag for mostly off the tee as a fairway finder, and still use 3 hybrid as a second shot into par 5s as an example? Or would that be a mis-manage of gapping issues in the bag?

Do whatever works if you have the room in your bag.

Is that hybrid the longest club you feel comfortable hitting off the deck?

I'm going to say yes for now. I need to spend some more time with this driving iron and take it to the range to practice hitting off the ground though to make a better determination, and see about getting on a launch monitor to look at actual carry numbers and make sure the gapping isn't too similar. Although I feel like the driving iron will only be used for very certain situations 🤷‍♂️

They’ll probably be pretty similar distances, at least off the tee.

But if you can’t reliably hit a 4 or 5 wood and you have a spot in your bag, it’s probably not a bad idea.

Whatever works. Can relate: in my constant messing with what clubs to bring I had a 4i utility and a 4h in the bag at one time. Same loft but iron has lower flight so good from under the trees.

That’s the setup I’m using. Driver, 2i, 19*h. I get 10-15 extra yards out of the 2i vs the hybrid. I used to have 3/5w in that spot but I came to the realization I wasn’t finding that many more fairways with 3/5w vs driver to justify. I find 2i to be the longest club that I can count on hitting fairways. Even when I don’t hit it that great, it still gets out there a decent ways and my biggest misses are usually still in play.

I don’t use it off the deck to often only because the times I’m at the right distance for it, I am usually looking at a green on a par 5 with front bunkers and/or surrounded by hazards. I’m not skilled enough to have a predictable ball flight with it. Sometimes I will get a nice high launch with a soft landing and other times it will be a lower flight with a lot of roll out.

What you're proposing is fine as long as it covers your distance gaps.  Like you, I don't like like having a 5 and or 7 metal in the bag therefore I have my 2 hybrid and 21* driving iron with covers my gaps.

Off the tee i'm seeing myabe 10y max longer than my hybrid but the dispersion is much tighter. This driving iron does have a heavier shaft than current hybrid though so I might look into a different shaft for hybrid.

I always like to keep a cheap beat up hybrid that's purpose is to be beaten up.  I refuse to hit my beautiful irons off the dirt, I spend a lot of time in the trees and sometimes near roots, or rock etc and there's only 1 club I'm willing to swing in those ugly conditions.  I don't ever see not carrying a hybrid for those purposes, and I don't let that club dictate anything else on the course or my bag, such as distance gaps, off the deck, fairway finder etc.

It's used purely as a "rescue" club when my ball is damn near lost.

I assume you would never want to swing a nice driving iron in those same conditions, therefore, even if they go the exact same distance, they are filling different purposes, and you can easily justify carrying both.

Just how I personally view the 2 or 3 Hybrid.  YMMV

Same here.  3 utility and 5 wood.  Some times I take one out.  Other times I have both in the bag and will either take my 60* or gap wedge out depending on course conditions.  No prob manipulating a 56.

I'll switch around the top of my bag with the 2i and UW at the expense of the 4i or GW depending on the course.  If it's very short (<7000 yds) the fairway wood or driver is left out instead.  Having the right club for the required shot makes me wish we could have 15 clubs!  Learning how to hit different shots with a club is a fun challenge, but it's better to be confident when it matters

Currently what I am thinking about too. In my odds bag I go 13* 2w, 18* 3i, 26* 5i and so on. I love the 3i of the tee but I dont feel like hitting it of the deck very often. I came across very cheap the oldest model Mizuno clk flihi 23* hybrid and after range yesterday, it is easiest club I ever hit. High, low, draws and can cut it. I have TM jetspeed 19* hybrid with much longer shaft which I can occasionaly bomb off the tee but thats it. This hybrid is different story. So even tho it screws with my ocd about setup, I will try it tomorrow as it may be the longest sure off the deck club for me for approaches around 200y. I was aiming for 220 sign at the range and from slight elevated tee I was bit short. I also like the idea about rescue beated up club mentioned.

If you have the room and it works do it. I'm a big fan of specialized clubs and the top of my bag generally shows it. I usually go driver, 15° 3w, 17° 2hy, into 4hy. If I really want to get weird I can drop the 4hy and put a 16° dhy in the bag. I pretty much use the 3w off the tee and the 2hy is the jack of all trades type club for the tee, ball advancement, punch out if the branches are quite low.

My top end is currently:

18.5* Wood. (Can adjust 17*-20*)
19.5* 4 Iron (one length).

22.5* Wood. (Can adjust 21*-24*)
23* 5 iron. Standard length.

The 4 iron serves a different purpose. It’s my tee club when I absolutely have to hit a draw. It’s a great punch out club. Contact with the 7 iron length shaft is easier on really bad lies.

The woods launch high and spin.

I am a big fan of an iron between the woods.
