Opinions; Best Putter Tech….

roundersmitty

Recommended Posts

I have got into experimenting with different putter tech over the years.  Here is my favourites, and interested in other members favourites.  And I do know….some will favour no tech at all.

1. Lab Golf; Lie Angle Balanced tech

2. Makefield; Moment of Inertia, cup face technology, weight adjustability

3. Sacks Parente; ultra low balance point, high moi, weight forward cg

4. Odyssey/Toulon; stroke lab weighting, diamond milling, white hot/micro hinge face, high moi weighting

6. Bobby Grace; radial face-ball contact above equator for immediate roll

7. SIK, Cobra, LA Golf; descending loft technology

8. Evnroll; sweet face grooves

add in stability/low torque shafts

this is the tech I have tried.  Interested in other tech and what others think is the best out there.

Pxg head/hosel...any hosel on any head.

I have tried those also.  Tried all the Spiders.  Liked the FCG. Have a Bat Attack and Blackjack.  Those are high moi and also have good face tech.

Not sure if I’m in the no tech at all category and call me what you will but I personally just started using a 1990s becu ping Scottsdale anser and I love it. Before I had a more modern style Wilson staff 8833 which is a typical blade putter but without the counterweights  and liked it and before that was a wilson 8802 but came across the anser and it just worked for me. I did spend some time trying some others out at the store and just didn’t find one that felt right. I love the weight and balance of the ping and the sound slot adds a little extra auditory feedback that I like. Plus it’s cool to pull out an old putter and keep up with or even do better than people with fancy new ones.

I think it is fair to say that the Anser was the pioneer of putter tech.  And….still being copied….

IMO, LAB hands down. It absolutely makes me a better putter without having to practice.

I also proved it out on a beginner golfer (my daughter). She had the typical "figure 8" on her swing path with a standard blade putter. I handed her a LAB, and on the first stroke and still now (been about 4 weeks) she is straight back and straight through and is putting fantastic!

This. LAB hands down! Not even close for another company. All beginners start out with a LAB, they would improve rapidly. Can even make a good putter, a great putter.

Came here to say this.  I haven't hit a putter with TR type grooves yet I haven't liked.  LAB putters have my interest as well, just not ready to make the jump.

Not so much putter tech but I have also been really interested in building a putter with a SS wristlock grip.  On the few I have tried, the putter just feels locked in.

I think you left out SeeMore. . Especially their latest offerings, like the Mini Giant of the Deep Flange...they have their RST technology, updated weighting, milled bodies with good feel.

I think LAB has very good tech and options...but they havnt worked out for me. At their price point i would love to have an In person fitting before buying.

Just got my LAB Link.1, amazing putter and it's all in the tech.

Coming from a Mallet, I wanted to have a Blade as well, maybe switch on and off see what I was putting better with.

Could have purchased another Scotty, went with the LAB, so happy, you can FEEL the putter moving in the right direction, instant confidence, so excited to putt & grind with this thing.

I'm was just recently made a believer in TM's True Roll inserts.  I tried a number of inserts for various brands but always found myself coming back to a milled face.  Picked up a Spider GT for giggles at a pro shop and loved the feel.  Saw that it was on sale for $199.99 so I was sold.   It gets the ball rolling faster but also very easy to control my pace.  I think this will be in the bag for at least a couple years.

odyssey tri-hot tungsten toe/heel moi forward weighting

Another vote for this. 5K MOI (higher than most mallets) and forward weighting, very forgiving and the weight being forward really helps to get that smooth feel of the weight being lined up close to the shaft. I hope more companies go in this direction.

I also loved the Yes! C-Grooves and now that the patent has expired I'm not sure why more companies haven't just outright copied those grooves.

Biggest for me has been the feel that I'm now accustomed to due to the new shaft trend.  I'm so used to the feel of the LAGP/ UST All In I don't think I'll ever be able to roll a steel shafted putter again.

I did a fitting on quintic when the lagp/stability just game out and my fitter who is a friend of mine had a lagp in his putter with the same head specs as what I was fitted to.   Immediately noticed a difference in the slow mo roll video and the numbers were better almost across the board.   I didn't believe it of course -  so I took his putter out to the putting green that I spend about 5 hours a week on and know every break possible on.   I hit quite a few long long putts and if you practice enough you know how hard it is to send 3 balls down the exact same line where they collide with one another inline with the hole from 40 feet away.  I did this probably 4 times in a row.... that's what sold me on shaft tech on top of making me a believer of the quintic fitting.   Anything that adds consistency, eliminates a variable and adds a now preferred feeling to a club is a win for me.

It's almost impossible to pick out a single technology - but here in the past 20 years or so - I'd have to say "inserts and/or face millings" that help to promote end-over-end roll.

C-Grooves stand out to me in this respect - as do a number of "horizontal milling" patterns employed by Rife, Evenroll, Bettinardi, etc.

I happen to love the Bettinardi RCF milling.

The face technology is definitely the biggest and probably "best" putter technology for those that find what fits their game. I haven't experimented enough with LAB to really know how much better it could be, but just from rolling demo putts with them, they stay incredibly square as advertised.

Putter shafts…….. a new rabbit hole

Along with shafts and the other tech mentioned, golf ball alignment seems to be another one that is growing to try and help people with putting (Callaway Triple Track, Taylormade Pix, Srixon Divide, even Titleist has adjusted the marks on the ProV1s for alignment). Honestly, I thought it was all a gimmick, but the triple track works. Looking at my Arccos data, I am positive strokes gained putting compared to my target handicap since switching to the triple track.
