US Open Tickets - Lack of Demand?

I guess to put price in perspective, these were the retail prices for PGA Championship tickets this year at Oak Hill.

Monday – Wednesday: Starts at $55 (plus taxes and fees)

Thursday: First round, starts at $200 (plus taxes and fees)

Friday: Second round, starts at $265 (plus taxes and fees)

Saturday: Third round, starts at $270 (plus taxes and fees)

Sunday: Championship round, starts at $270 (plus taxes and fees)

Packages: You can purchase multi-day packages through PGA's website starting at $1,950.

https://www.chase.com/personal/credit-cards/education/basics/pga-championship-tickets

That said, the cheapest ticket prices included non-alcoholic concessions (2 entrees, 2 snacks, and 2 drinks per trip with unlimited trips), parking, and they had water stations with bottled water anyone could just take a bottle from at any time.  Basically, if you didn't drink any alcohol or buy souvenirs, you could spend the whole day there without spending any money beyond your ticket price and be well-fed and well-hydrated.

Junior tickets were free (up to 4 per paid ticket), but didn't include concessions.  Although given the way concessions worked, you could just get food for your kids using your own ticket.

Rochester is in New York state, but that region's cost of living isn't that high outside of taxes - certainly much lower than the Los Angeles area.

Los Angeles is a weird sports market.  They've got 20 million people in the area.  Yet, it's not unusual to see USC or UCLA with half filled stadiums for their football games.  The Dodgers and Lakers are huge draws, almost status symbol like, but other sports teams don't get the same type of draw.  And, how do you explain the LA area not having a professional football team for over a decade and life just goes on?  Their sports fans are different than the midwest or south.  Not worse, just different.

Sniping pga tickets for well under face value isn't rare. I sat on the sidelines for Oak Hill and paid well under original retail rates the days I purchased tickets.

Best deal was my Saturday tickets. $40 including fees which also included unlimited food and non alcoholic drinks. Yeah it rained a lot but still was an amazing day. Plus those chicken sandwiches were excellent 😊

This is a little silly.  The fact people who bought tickets earlier can't (according to you) sell them for the same or more money now is of no concern or consequence to the USGA.  "Unprofessional"? - lol.

Patrons can't "always sell" their Masters tickets - wrong-o. The U.S. Open is providing a platform for that, just like . . . . the Open Championship. Seems like a nice service, but you complain.

Tickets still available for those wanting to attend the U.S. Open and making up reasons to complain about that, only here.  Maybe they've increased the supply to accommodate demand and allow more access --- just because they don't sell out doesn't mean they aren't making money.  And on the one hand you think this has something to do with growing the game, on the other you think scalpers  should be cashing in . . . . .

Oh come on Hawkeye.  I’m the farthest thing from a scalper.  Unless you call someone wanting to take family to the first US Open in Los Angeles since 1948 a scalper.   I have been to multiple major golf tournaments and they were all sold out well in advance.  Masters tickets are darn near impossible to get and The (British) Open has a lottery for tickets.  The USGA specifically said that fewer tickets would be sold at LACC than usual.  The fact that demand can’t snap this smaller number up is surprising.

I am still trying to get my arms around the statement, "People who bought tickets earlier are losing money."

Are US open tickets traded on a commodities exchange?

What I meant is tickets are going for much less than face value.  Due to obligations we cannot make it one day and hence due to low demand will lose quite a bit of coin.

It’s the first US Open in the area in 75 years at a really nice club.  I enjoy playing LA north.  Surprising that demand is so low.

Well. The economy is much weaker than they are letting on.  So ….. most folks I know aren’t traveling or doing things like this.

Hmm I agree with you WAY more than not. Or maybe you're just being sarcastic. But wherever I go it seems is infested with way too many people spending money like they robbed a Brinks truck... Flights, hotels, golf courses, golf tournaments, ski mountains, restaurants all busy.

No wonder you came here looking for support, blaming it on the USGA and low demand.   I think I have this figured out.  This is a marital problem.  You're taking heat from your wife for buying tickets too early, and buying the extra tickets.

Not calling you a scalper!  But there is a difference between wondering why tickets aren't sold out and what the myriad reasons could be and calling out the USGA as unprofessional, not growing the game, not letting people make back their money on tickets they purchased in advance and so on.  I think it is surprising, but I guess not jumping to other accusations without more.

Okay fair enough.  Was writing that late at night.  First major I’ve seen in a while with this little demand.  Just a middle class guy that may sell a couple tickets.  Caught me a bit off guard that’s all.

Ticket prices and demand are always fungible. I think we're used to seeing prices driven up by scarcity (whether perceived or actual). It's always a little surprising when it doesn't pan out that way.

I see a range of prices from 270-400 for Saturday round on vivid

If anything those prices seem crazy. I think I got pga champ tickets for like 80 bucks just in 2019

How much were US Open tickets in 2021 and last year?

Seems like they just estimated pricing vs demand and we’re pretty on target
