US Open Tickets - Lack of Demand?

Jack Nicholson belongs to all the LA private clubs.  His favorite is....LACC.  This is a risky choice of venue to be honest, mostly because it is in the middle of a large residential area and has poor access.  I recall people saying players may have to arrive by helicopter to make their tee-times.  At least there are two courses for the sprawling USGA footprint needed to properly host an event of this scale which is enormous.  And I think ticket sales, however weak they may be, are limited due to the logistics of the place.  I think once everyone arrives and settles in, they will be treated to a fine event.  But the USGA will not return again.

Tickets may have been limited, but not anymore.  If they were you would think they could sell out at least one day.  It’s the freaking US Open!  Masters tickets are like gold and the Open has a raffle but US Open tickets are readily available?!  I know a couple members and the USGA is making the club look bad.  Rochester, NY can sell out but Los Angeles can’t?  Someone at the USGA got greedy and now tickets are stale on the shelves.  It is what it is.

Per Rich Lerner on ‘Live From’, it’s completely sold out.

Ti,

Not sure exactly what happened.  Looks like they pulled the tickets.  In the resale marketplace tickets were selling for far below face value.  Not seeing the resale section on the app anymore.  Could be me though

So you’re saying you don’t think it sold out? He said sold out and they’re expecting (*)30k a day.
Man it looks like an absolutely fantastic track and the weather is gonna be perfect. I’m excited

*I have been informed by our resident fact checker that this number is not accurate. He has also informed me there were only 22k tix sold for each day. So it’s 22k not 30k. I was watching ‘Live From’ and believed I heard Mr, Lerner say 30k. Clearly I misheard or Rich misspoke. Either way I take full responsibility for my error. I regret and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you or your loved ones 😇

30k per day on course? Read that the USGA capped ticket sales to 22k per day.

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/us-open-2023-los-angeles-country-club-membership-host-membership-usga

The 22,000 tickets distributed each day will be the fewest in the modern history of the championship, and thanks to LACC’s verve for selling corporate hospitality (the footprint being the largest in the event's 123-year history), approximately 14,000 fans will have access to the cushy confines of those venues—meaning there will be only about 8,000 of those from the “general public” to roam the grounds.

It was 22k GP and about 8k volunteers for a total of 30k. Next time I’ll be more specific 😊
And honestly it doesn’t really matter to me since I’ll be inside the ropes as an on course volunteer and getting shuttled to and from the course all 4 days.

Enjoy the event. That said 8k volunteers for this event? USGA says 3,500 are needed. BTW when are volunteers counted in attendance numbers? 🤔

https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/championships/2023/u-s--open-volunteers/faqs.html#:~:text=Q%3A I want to volunteer,that requires long-term planning.

Q: I want to volunteer for the 2023 U.S. Open Championship.  How do I sign up?

A: Organizing a volunteer force of more than 3,500 individuals is an enormous task that requires long-term planning.

3,500 to 8,000 volunteers is quite the leap no? Source?

My goodness GRM. All I was doing was reporting what I heard Rich say during todays ‘Live From’ telecast. Are there 30k, 22k, how many will actually be “walking the grounds”??? 3,500 volunteers, 8,000 volunteers… Don’t know, honestly don’t really care! Lol

Rich said it was sold out. Good enough for me! 😜

LOL! You must care since you keep posting about it right? You tossed out the figures. Hmm.

Oh boy. I don’t care in the sense of specifics. All I initially posted about this evening was the fact it was sold out in response to blade saying it won’t bcs it’s in LA. Then in response to SoCal gave the 30k number I heard from Rich. If that means I care, so be it! 🤪

Of course you have no actual reply. Just a jumbled word salad. 🤣

How is this an argument?! I gave you an honest reply about how I feel. What exactly were you wanting in order for you not to tell me my response is a “jumbled word salad”??? Am I being punk’d?!

Yeah, my LA jokes aside - it really is in a crappy area to get to. They gonna shuttle folks in from Westfield Mall or something?

Every time I went to the Genesis, I always just parked in Santa Monica and hopped one of the shuttles to the Riv. Which was easy cuz there's plenty of parking in SM. But there ain't a whole lot in the general LACC area.

It’s all good brother.  I had a pair listed on the resale page but apparently resale was pulled?  I guess I have to sell them on stub hub.   I am disappointed with how this was handled.  It goes to show just how good Augusta National is at tournament administration in comparison.  Anyway looking forward to this tournament.   Will be good.

Without diving in more I’ll just say those ticket prices are nuts. Certainly understand that many industries are trying to recoup lost revenues from the Covid years (y’all flown anywhere lately $$$$$$$$$$), but 300.00 a day for the US Open seems bonkers. Used to live in L.A. so I get the context but it still seems very bloated.

The tickets in Rochester for the pga championship were around $250 a day but that included food. And cost of living is fractional compared to LA. Though tickets could generally be had for far less in the secondary market if you could wait till the last minute to buy.

Last time I checked, Jack was only a member of Bel Air and Lakeside.

LACC infamously does not want entertainers or those in the entertainment industry.   Whether it's anti-semitism or plain old snobbery I don't know, but aside from Reagan, I can't think of one.

I live here not more than 10 minutes from the club...I've met dozens of members of the other clubs over the decades.   Only met three from LACC.   One from my kids preschool, one at work (financial services) and another one who I temped for when I moved out here...he went to jail for financial fraud so my guess is his membership was revoked!

I did play once (silent auction at kid's pre-K) pre-renovation.  What I remember most is having to wear long pants, the phone booths in the locker room, and the chef putting mayonaise on my corned beef on rye sandwich...WTF???

Augusta National doesn't have anything to do with ticket resale for the Masters nor sets up any process for that so really not much to compare to as far as tickets go.  Otherwise, yes, they are experts at tournament admin for sure.  USGA probably has a handle on that as well. 🙂

This ^^. I've attended plenty of golf tournaments but I've never paid to do it. I might go to something like this if it was free and I was already in the area but I can't imagine putting time, money and effort into making it happen.

And yet you paid to volunteer for the US Open this year but backed out of it because you didn't like your assignment.

Okay @grm24 I just saw a replay of what Rich said and paid closer attention! He said sold out at 22k per day (wasn’t specific about who’s walking the grounds/sittin’ where. Then said including volunteers, media and staff it’s around 30k a day. Apologize again for my misquote earlier. Here is to hoping it didn’t adversely affect anyone’s life too greatly 😊 🍻

I didn't feel good about it when I signed up...but at least you get something including free admission, parking and food for a week.  Plus a bunch of RL apparel.   Plus I like the guys on the Riviera committee.   It's not really about watching the golf or golfers, as odd as that sounds.

Gives me a reason to get out of the house...  My family is driving me nuts.

Agree.  I  just cannot imagine spending that per person for a family of 3 to see what is on TV.  Or to see less than what is on TV.

and I’m not being obtuse.  It truly is very weird to me in this day and time to pay that for something with no tangible lasting value.
