I don't believe that fairway woods and hybrids are easier to hit than a long iron.  Some of the so called "driving irons" these days do help with launch and are forgiving, there are also those that are definitely designed for taking worms heads off.  Gotta be selective for what you want.  I have hit hybrids that refuse to launch up in the air, same goes for fairway woods.

I find my misses are worse with woods/hybrids. When I miss with my 2 iron (ping crossover) it’s usually just short, but still playable

So I can keep a trajectory that is not affected as much by the wind. Balls that hang in the air ( especially straight into ) have a smaller margin of error to be pushed into bad places!

I certainly wouldn't use a 2-iron now that my driver SS has fallen to around 105-mph. I simply don't have the juice for it now that I'm closing in on 40yo. 

 

But there was a time when I did use a 2-iron and felt like I could really stripe it, especially off the tee where it'd get most of it's play.

 

What I would've said at that point is that the 2-iron is easier to hit straight and much more effortless to control in terms of trajectory and curve. You aren't ever going to hit a 2-iron off the planet no matter how you swing it.

 

So if you've got the speed, it can be a great control club. It's usually a "fairway finder" for those big hitters who can pipe it 225-250. 

 

Keep in mind those same guys are not having to use fairway metals or hybrids to get into Par-5s at their local club. They're probably looking at a mid- or long-iron approaches which (with their speed) they have no problem hitting well enough to attack those greens.

I’m 50 with a similar swing speed and have no problem hitting low lofted irons or woods.  You don’t need extreme club speed to hit low lofted irons and woods.    I would still play a 2 iron but I hit my 17 degree hybrid really well.  Lol almost 40….

52 and I use a 2-iron regularly and even a 1-iron occasionally.

 

I just don't hit hybrids or fairway woods very well from the ground and dont like them.  Teed up is perfectly fine but still prefer the 1 and 2 from a teed up position.

In short, a hybrid is an ineffective solution to a problem I don't have.

Calling @Pepperturbo…🤣 For whatever reasoning, I prefer the 2 iron to a hybrid. It’s my swing I know, but I’ll hook a hybrid off the planet. I know my swing. Fitter in Florida once handed me his personal hybrid and said it won’t go left, 3rd swing, I said that’s off the planet , he said yep and put it back in his bag.  I can deal with a 5 wood but prefer long irons still. To each their own.

I should add, my 2-iron's no longer a real 2-iron, as I'm not stupid.

 

I also have a 4-wood (or perhaps a 'strong 7-wood' in modern parlance) for those occasions when I play a course where a lofted wood is a better option.

My friend has a Tommy Armour 845 2 iron that he still plays. Absolutely stripes it, every time. 

I think some people are just really good with long irons but most people play better with hybrids?

I have fought hybrids for years. I'd rather hit a lower lofted iron or even a fairway wood for sure.

I have a rare Miura 1-iron 1957 baby blade.  The only reason I bought it was an attempt to create the most difficult possible club to hit.  I don’t think I’ve ever carried it in an actual round, but I practice with it all the time and it’s really fun.

I haven't used a 2i since I put my MacGregor MTs into my fond memories bag in 1994.

 

But, modern players who have decent clubhead speed and are above-average ball strikers may keep a 2i in the bag. It can keep the ball low and can be used to punch a ball under tree limbs.

 

Circa 2008, I finally decided to put a LW (wedge #4) in my bag. To make room, I dropped the 4i, strengthened the 5i one degree and kept the 3i. It made a great driving iron. Bridge clubs included a 3W and 5W. The 5W launched high, the 3i launched lower and somewhat shorter. They covered each other well.

Mine is an 18 degree 3i, but it serves it purpose. Lower flight, less carry more run out.  Works better off some tees, better for run ups on par 5s, etc. I can launch a 5w or 4hy higher and get it to stop faster. Each has its place.

I'm not sure what a 2 iron is any more.  My current 4 iron is the same loft as my old blade 2 iron at 20°.  Other modern 4 irons are even lower lofted.  Back in the day, my 2 iron went the same distance as my wooden 5 wood.  Today, my 5 wood goes farther than my 4 iron.  

 

As mentioned above, a bad swing with a hybrid or 7 wood will result in a much worse shot than a bad swing with my 4 iron.

A blade 2I is the most versatile punch shot club I've ever used + on days you are swinging well pulling it out on the tee and matching the results of your playing partners with their hollow body pseudo-metalwood utility "irons" is peak dominance move.

I use a 2 iron on tighter courses because my groupings are tighter verses a fairway wood.

 

The fairway wood is easier to hit, but I can get a little hooky with it sometimes.

 

I put my 4i back in the bag vs my hybrid as well. I’m hitting it pretty well right now, but there are times when it leaves me. During those times the 2 iron is logically in time-out as well.
