Ever bought a club for a particular hole on your course?

Yes, guilty as charged. I set my bag up around the courses you play.

When I was in college, this started. We had a shortish par 4 really tight with pines left and right. I tried 2 iron, 5 wood, and finally settled on the 2 hybrid. More recently I bought a 3 wood just for the tee shot on a hole. I actually hit that 3 wood 3 times today because its more like a mini driver.

I'm thinking of a Par 3 on a course I played regularly many years ago. Slightly uphill, small green with a false front and balls (so balls slightly short would roll back off the green rather than kicking forward) plus it kind of tilted to the right (so any ball with sidespin on it would tend to funnel off the right side. Anywhere from 155 to 170 yards depending on where the tees and hole location were set each day.

I actually tried a 7w I bought specifically for that hole. That distance would normally be a 4-iron (back then I had long irons, not hybrids) and I just could not landed it up on that green and keep it on the surface.

Didn't really work. The 7w went higher, landed softer but also brought over-the-green into play. I was averaging worse than bogey on it with the 4-iron and averaged worse than bogey with 7w. I dumped the 7w and just accepted I'd very rarely par the hole and I'd make a lot of doubles it if I hit a bad tee shot and that's how it was. Tough hole for a short-hitting high handicapper (at the time I was about a 17hcp).

Yes. I play a course with doglegs on two of the holes and trouble over the doglegs. Too much trouble to try to cut the corner. Crossover works well.
Otherwise, if I know the course I adjust the bag for what I think I will need.

"Get dressed Spaulding, you're playing golf today."
" No I'm not Grandpa, I'm playing tennis."
"No, you're playing golf and you're going to like it."

My entire bag is setup for the course I play 90% of the time.

Buy the club!

Years ago was playing the Burner driver at 9° and had this dog leg left par 4  with a grove of trees guarding the dog leg about 200 yds out. There was a "V" in the tree line but you had to hit it probably 110-20 ft high and another 40 yds to carry it. I couldn't hit the Burner that high so I bought a Cobra HS9 12° and moon shot that driver. Sounded like a cheap aluminum baseball bat and only used it on that hole. Fortunately it was just a course I played in a league for a few years.

Maybe the club starts out as that initially, but if it was effective enough, then it would stay in my bag even for courses outside of mine. I cant imagine someone getting a club so niche that it couldnt be used in other scenarios, or build a club that effectively curves it exact amount each time, although Im sure we all had clubs that seemed to do that on-demand at some point.

I do carry two lob wedges depending on the course I play, or even to adjust to varying conditions even on my home course.

When its been dry for couple weeks, I use a L grind Vokey to help with firmer turf and tight lies around the green. Other courses with softer rough conditions or wet/damp conditions at my home course, I use a S grind to help with turf.

My nemesis hole is a 185 yard par 3 with a forced carry and no room to bail in either direction.

I bought a ZX4 5-iron specifically for that shot.  But when I bought it, my ZX5 5-iron started acting right and I actually got better results with it than the ZX4.

Fortunately I bought it with pro shop credit. I would have been bummed if I spent $170 for a failed experiement.

I guess I could say I buy clubs for a particular hole. I end up buying clubs I call "just in case" clubs. When I buy clubs I like I usually end up collecting more. I carry a 4w and 7w. The 4w sets up for 90% of the courses I play if I'm not using a driver.. I liked the model so much I grabbed a 3w just in case. I recently bought new hybrids. I carry a 4h and 5h. I liked them so much I picked up a 3h just in case. On certain courses the 7w is out now and the 3h is in. I played a course two weeks ago and I definitely had to have the 7w in the bag. Things have a way of working out when you buy more than you need.

My bag is set up for my home club as that’s where 90% of my golf is played. Even if I go elsewhere I don’t change my bag setup, I just adapt. These are the clubs I play all the time so have the most faith in.

More or less, we have two long par 3s where my 5-wood fits perfectly.

Now I use it "everywhere", but I hadn't bought it if it weren't for these holes.

I had a 2 iron built for my first Scotland trip and only hit it twice on the trip

Too be fair it was built along side a new set of irons

I bought a 13* degree fairway wood for when I started working at Sand Valley since I play a 12 degree driver

and wanted something that launched extremely low off the tee on very windy days that would run on the firm and

fast fairways ... I still use it from time to time

I was a member at a nine holer which used alternate tees to make 18 different tee shots.  One par four had a tee that required a drive through a tunnel of trees, and the tunnel pointed out to the right side of the fairway.

I built an 18 degree 460cc driver and just hit it over the trees on the left end of the tunnel.  By doing that the fairway was super wide, and I was closer to the hole.

I miss that club.  It could bring rain.  And it was amazing down wind.

Yes, and it's my favorite club. My home course has a 200 yard par 3 that plays about 185. I went to the store looking for a club that would reliably get me that distance and I found an Adam's idea xtd ti super hybrid. That club has become my jack of all trades club and I use it a fair amount.

I have a 4H for a type of shot I face two or three times a round at my home course.

  • One shorter par 4 launches off a hill and the landing area narrows to 10 yards wide, with OB left and hazard right. If I hit a draw, the ball drops short into wider part of fairway and ends up about 120 yards out, just short of the narrow neck.
  • A second medium par 4 has OB left, hazard right, and a deep grass gorge off the end of the landing area. It's an old style S-shaped image.png.c579e9d71d6c09c7b276da6644476fe2.pnglanding area. And... normal days feature a gusting left-to-right crosswind. The tee blocks position varies, making the hole play 340 to 380 in length. If the blocks are up, I can use the 4H to hit a stinger, which runs under the wind and (hopefully) lands on the hard high point of the fairway, and tumbles down to a spoon area just short of the deep grass gorge.

In my prior bag mix (just three wedges), I carried a 4H and a 4i. But, my current MAX irons fly longer, and squeezed the 4i out of the bag. Also, I learned to hit a stinger with the 4H.

Plus, the 4H normally gets used for standard approaches on other holes.

Note: Our course hosts a lot of scrambles, and the greens crew often moves back the tee blocks on a few holes to challenge the groups. So, you end up with a sprinkling of holes that play longer than the scorecard indicates.
