RBC Canadian Open 2023

The PGA Tour heads north of the border this week for the 2023 RBC Canadian Open at Oakdale Golf and Country Club in Toronto. The history of the Canadian Open stretches back to 1904 but this will be the first staging of the vent at Oakdale and with any course which is new to the Tour and it will be interesting to see how the pros work there way around. Rory McIlroy after his faltering finish in Ohio heads back looking for the three-peat and whilst he would certainly be a popular winner, the home crowd which has been starved of a Canadian winner since 1954 will go delirious if one of their own can finally claim the trophy once again. Amongst the Canadian contingent the likes of Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Svensson with wins already on the season will fancy their chances however a reasonably strong field with some guys looking to sharpen their games before the big one next week will mean that whoever does come away with the win will have needed to go some to get there.

I'm in the pic front row directly behind a wall of cops and secturiy , I led the charge like we were storming the beaches of Normandy while the security and cops yelled "get the f back" they simply couldn't do anything about 1000 ppl sprinting down the fairway 

 

 

Hope this year is as good as last! And also hope to run down the fairway again, lol

It would be nice to see one of our Canadian boys win. The last was in 1954, the year I was born. Oakdale is a very nice venue and will be a great place for spectators, it has a lot of history. 
 

It is a shame that the Canadian Open and other national opens do not receive greater status as they once did.

Sad that our National Open is not only stuck between the Memorial and US Open but now completely hijacked by the LIV/PGA Tour nonsense. Money talks, tradition walks.

I must say I love this event since it moved from from the "permanent" Glen Abbey venue.  Canada has such a long, rich and storied golf history and deserved better than that place.  There are so many great courses that need to visited still!  I'm in the camp that the venue "makes" the event.  What other courses could and should host this event?  

 

Such a shame that this event has dropped from its place as a leg in the "Triple Crown" and Fifth Major to a non-designated event.  Golf Canada needs to wrestle this one back from the Tour.  The majors and to a lesser degree the national opens will continue to play a larger historical role as "regular Tour golf - US, EURO & ASIA" becomes more closed.

 

Where in the new schedule could this fit?  A move to September was not liked per news articles.  Perhaps back in July in their traditional spot?

 

Looking forward to watching a new course (for me), a national open, and the eager Canadian crowds.

Royal Ottawa - Tom Bendelow design

St. Charles has a Ross and MacKenzie nine

I'd throw in Laval sur le Lac, the Blue Course : 76.0 143 7,221yds - would have to be lengthened for sure for these guys. Founded in 1917. Historic venue, parkland design with great around the green touch (without any rough in the green complexes), that runs 12.5 / 13 on any given day (ask me how I know!). Not sure about infrastructure for the new PGA/LIV tour though.

Thanks! I fear Oakdale at 7200 yds, par 72 is much too short for the pros. Par 72s need to get close to 8000 these days to necessitate anything but short irons/wedges into most, if not all, par 4s.

I respectfully disagree about Royal Ottawa. It has tour level conditioning but it's not a great layout. No way it could handle a PGA tour event.

My prediction is winning score will be -21 with Mike Weir making the cut. He played at Oakdale several times during the Ontario Better Ball tournament. He actually won it one year with his partner and former caddie Brennan Little.

Agreed, I'm a member there and there are too many forced lay-ups and short holes that can't be lengthened for pros.

Also, oddly enough, adding hazards at a certain yardage out from the tee has been a proposed design solution from the anti-ball rollback crowd when they say that courses just need to be set-up "right."
