Favorite Strong Lofted 3-Wood in Recent Years?

Grape

Recommended Posts

Not for nothing but a Strong 3 is pretty hard to hit off the deck too (depending on your speed).

People love the Rocket 3 from TM. The last great 3+ I had was the Mavrik Max version. I liked that there were two weight ports for fine tuning.

I tried a few and settled on the Mavrik Max 3+.  Easy to get on Callaways used site.  It was listed as "average" but came looking brand new.  I was ok with a bonded hosel, and I liked the two positions for moving weights.  I play it a tad shorter than a normal 3w, so I added a little more weight in the back port.  I also play it with a very light and softer flex Bassara 40 HI shaft (they were oem in some older Titleist drivers and fairways, and can be had cheap on ebay.)

The combo produces fairly high launch with low spin.  I don't have the length to reach the greens on most Par 5 holes, so I'm not trying to land it softly.  This is used as more of a tee club on dogleg Par 4s, or when it is windy and I just want to send one down the middle rolling out.  I can also tee it up, hit up on it, and put a big high fader on the ball too, channeling my inner Mac Boucher.  Great for long Par 3s.

I still use a TEE E8 Beta.  It's a 12* club per spec.  In spite of my speed dropping into the 103 range, I'm still able to use it reasonably well for longer approach shots to the green.

One nice aspect, starting with the E8 Beta, Tour Edge began using real world shafts in their top fairway woods.  Mine has a real Rogue Silver 70.  The Ex9 models, you could get real world Diamanas, and so on.

Hard part, finding one.  It's quite a few model years ago.  🙂

The TSi3 13.5 was brilliant. I switched to the TSR2+ and didn't get along with it. Also never liked the G400 stretch. But I would absolutely consider putting that TSi3 13.5 back in the bag.

Another vote for the TSi3 13.5 here. Got a hookup on a Paradym TD 15* this spring but went back to it this weekend after not being very happy with the TD. Safe to say I won't be going away from that TSi3 for a good while and keeping an eye out for a 15*. Great footprint for a 3+ and very easy to hit off any lie, even lofted down to 12.75.

Have a buddy with a Stealth+ Rocket and that thing is impressive, would put that on the short list as well, but I wouldn't want to be hitting that thing into greens.

I think first you have to decide do you like a big headed 3+ or a smaller one.  For big headed that can hit off the deck fairly easily, I do concur with the Mavrik Max 3+.  Looks great.  Really good off the tee and can handle off the deck very nicely (better than the TSR2+ in my book).  If you like smaller head...the TM Rockets are great.

What didn’t you like about the stretch?

In a strong three wood -- used frequently off the tee -- I lean toward the deeper faced models. All Ping fairway woods are very shallow, even the Stretch. I also just hated the feel and underwhelming ball speeds of the G400 stretch. To be fair, however, that's the only version of the Stretch I've played. I have not owned or tried the more recent ones.

Actually, I take that back. I also owned the G425 LST fairway. It was good with ball speed but the head is quite small. I want a bigger footprint, not smaller, in a strong 3 wood.

I’ve had PXG Gen 2, Gen 4, TM Stealth +, Stealth 2+ (opened to 13*), and a TSR2+ 13. All of them were good, but none were perfect. 13* just never fit my eye really well even though I liked the gapping because I like to play a 5 wood for par 5 approaches. The BRNR Mini 13.5 has been the best addition to the bag in years. I can murder this thing off the tee and off the deck. I like the look of the loft on the face more than any other 13* club Ive ever used.
