Hole renovation

Recommended Posts

Our 410 yard, 13th hole is undergoing a renovation. It’s the lowest point on our golf course and drainage is being installed in the fairway. For the next few weeks, tee markers have been placed at about 95-yards from the center of the green. An area in the left rough has been mowed and all players have been instructed (men and women) to play the hole as a par 3 from this spot. Our clubhouse and nineteenth hole is adorned with plaques and large boards honoring accomplishments of golfers throughout the years. Two large boards honor players who have aced a hole, with their name, hole number, and year. My question to the group, should a player who aces this temporary par 3 be awarded the honor? If so, years from now someone seeing the 13th hole aced might raise an eyebrow or two. However, the course setup was such, and the hole was played properly, so shouldn’t the honor be bestowed?

IMO.... No.

You said it's just shut down for a few weeks right? If that's the case then, no, I don't think a hole in one on a temporary hole should be "honored" with a plaque or nameplate or whatever. If it was going to play as a par 3 for a long period of time perhaps I'd feel differently.

If someone does make an ace, and they really want their name up there, maybe you can just get a different board or plaque for them.

Only way I could see it going up if the little plaque could read for the hole "13th - Temporary". It's still a HIO in my opinion, but you HAVE to have some delineation such that future folks aren't thinking someone aced a 400+ hole when it was a little wedge.

But you have to find SOME way to acknowledge the asterisk like @dugue4 suggests.

No. And my course had a similar situation last year but had the common sense to do the work sometime other than midseason.

There’s a stream running through the fairway at about 275 yards from the tee box. It took months and months of battling with the wetlands commission to get permission to do the work on this hole. Our club got the okay last month. The feeling was, “strike while the iron is hot”. The work should be completed and fresh sod laid by the end of this month.

HA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hilarious, as I personally experienced this just a couple years ago (in fact, even asked a question about it here).

425 Par 4. Course was building entirely new tee boxes - part of a larger modernization/lengthening of multiple holes on the course. So the usual tee boxes were basically a construction site. They temporarily moved the boxes up to about 150 - 160. Was obviously still a Par 4 on the scorecard, but was playing like an average (even slightly short) Par 3.

Yes - I had a hole in one (woohoo)!!!! Question I posed on WRX was this: Technically (HOI on a Par 4), it was not just a HIO (I've had a few over the many years I've played), it was actually that rarest of all animals - an Albatross ... which I've never had and never expected to.

So I asked around here - did I have my one and only Albatross? General consensus was exactly what it is here (great HOI, but no plaque) ... i.e., yes, congrats on the HIO, but no, can't think of it as an Albatross. And as much as I hate to agree, I do.

In my useless opinion, a 95 yd HIO does not deserve the plaque, since it is way too short for anything but a pitch and putt course. If, say, the temporary tees were 200 yds out, then I'd say it deserves a plaque with an asterisk.

95 yards is not a pitch and putt course for ladies. Just saying.

I am assuming, like most courses that close holes for renovation, they tell you to just record a "net par" for the hole?  Thats what they do at my club, and the idea is basically that the hole is closed, you dont record the score you actually got, and some people skip the hole entirely.

How could/would you count a score that actually isnt even going on your scorecard?

It's a nice shot for sure, but not a legit hole in one.

Hole in one for sure. I could go either way on the on the plaque, but I would opted them in with *.

For those that say 95 yards is too short... 7 at Pebble Beach was playing 98 yards last time is was there.

I was there two weekends ago, 95 yards playing about 105.  I guess not a real hole!
