Hi AllI have definitely caught the putter bug and may be a full on ho at this point.  I’m interested in getting my hands on an older Scotty, but don’t really know where to start.  I am more partial to the oil can/ black blade putters.  Any specific recommendations?  I’m a lefty, so supply is generally limited.

when you’re looking at old Scotty’s what are you looking for?  Current eBay listing below as an example, how are you assigning a value?  Thanks in advance!

I would look at previously sold putters on ebay, or follow closely for putters posted here to assign value.    Your question is extremely broad and is almost entirely dependant on condition, age, and personal preference.

As a fellow lefty, just know you will pay a premium, especially for the older scottys. Supply is limited, it is what it is, but as noted above just filter recently sold on ebay for left handed scottys to get an idea. If you watch like a hawk when they get posted, you may find a deal by somebody who doesn't know better, but it wont last long.

Thanks for responding.  Good call, didn’t mean to be so broad, my questions were really about restored vs, unrestored and how to tell.  What are your dealbreakers from a condition standpoint?

As others have stated, it's all personal preference. Perusing for sale ads here and eBay are your best bet.

The putter you have listed in your OP is 1000% restored even though the seller claims otherwise. You can tell by the aging pattern and the coloring on the nicks in the putter. The homemade sight dot also tanks the value as well. I would steer clear from this one if you're looking for an older putter.

Amazing how many people can't read simple questions these days.

Anyways OP, you'll definitely be paying the "lefty tax" on older Scotty's, kind of the reason I never got into collecting older ones and prices will only get worse. That one I'd say is over priced for a refinish and modification but at the same time prices go crazy, you can find one of these rusted to hell and people may ask the same price. Then you get someone who lets something decent go for half that price.

I picked up a used SC Circa 62 2 last year and really like it, it may be along the lines of what you’re looking for.  That said, as others have pointed out, the LH market is tighter.  There’s a lot of info on the forum threads regarding SCs, how to tell real from knock-offs, refinished putters, options to refinish them, etc.

You can get a good idea of value by using the “Sold” transactions on eBay.

The bad news is you will probably buy more than a few putters before you find “the one.”  The good news is that authentic SCs hold their value really well and you should be able to turn around and sell them for little or no loss.  Good luck!

Suckers pay retail. That’s one of the nice things about SC. Most of the time you’re just out paying shipping. You can spend some time on the putting green or play a few rounds to see if it’s what you really like. I’m not a believer in putting on carpet with a salesman telling me what I “need”.

I'm going to piggy back on this thread to ask about recommendations to clean up this top line. I just picked up this Pro Platinum Del Mar 3 for a song. Not interested in a full on restoration, but wouldn't mind cleaning up the top line a bit. Should I try sanding this down? Don't want to ruin the finish.

Just my 2 cents, but if you want to clean up a Pro Plat, you might as well do the whole thing. Pro Plats have a nickel plating on them as an protectant to the carbon steel head. If you start sanding or grinding it’ll start taking it off and that part of the putter will be susceptible to rust because it’ll be bare carbon steel. Plus the area you sand will have a different finish on it compared to the rest of the head so it may look odd at address.

I always highly recommend stripping the nickel before doing any work on it. If you go straight into sanding nickel it can create airborne particulates that are harmful to your lungs. Caswell makes a good product that strips nickel and works great with an old crockpot.
