5 Wood guys....Whats your setup

Recommended Posts

Until I found the 19* Callaway UW, I had a SIM 19* 5w w/ GD-DI 8X that was pretty awesome because it could be drilled 250+ off the tee and high fade 230ish off the fairway. UW is a little shorter shaft with the same numbers and more stable spin profile.

Hey guys looking to see what everyone is gaming for 5 wood, kicking the hybrid out of the bag as I never use it. Looking to go 5 wood route

Thanks

Good call. I have a Ping G425 Max with a ventus red shaft. Play it standard loft length and lie. I can carry it as long as 3 wood, it just won't roll out as much. It's also good from the rough too, like a hybrid.

Not always in the bag, but the two I have I cut short at 41.5", so they're almost like the UW or the wrx-legendary Cobra F6 Baffler.

TEE CBX 119 18° with Diamana D+ 72X and a Titleist 915F with Diamana D+ 80X.  Lead tape on the heads.  I like the CBX 119 a little better because of its compact looks and sits open, but both are great clubs.

Stealth2 w/ Oban Devotion HB 65.05. Light weight and really impressive! Favourite club in my bag.

I built up a Stealth2+ in a 3W with the same shaft but in 75.05 to balance the weight out better and still figuring it out.

Just purchased a tsr2 5 wood! Very excited to get a 5 wood back in the bag. I have a ventus black 7x that will go on it. Wondering, anyone recommend a Diamana shaft that plays similar to a ventus black but slightly softer?

Any reason you need a Diamana? Could go a Ventus Black 7S or Blue TR 7x?

Ping G430 set in the small minus position.  Tour 2.0 shaft -1/2”.  First fairway wood I have been a kebab to hit in years.  Probably tied with my driver as my favorite clubs in the bag.

I finally found a good 5 wood setup after a long search. Standard mavrik, 18 degree with a tensei blue 75x and I play it a 1/4 inch less than standard. Great combo, I çan smash it off the tee on tight par 4s and also hit it high into greens if need be on par 5s.. I did need to add lead tape to bring up the swing weight.

Stealth2+ 5W has earned its spot in my bag. I’ve played a 4W before many years ago but never a 5W. Have mine set one tick up on loft to close a bit at address with a TR Black 7x playing at 43” and the weight all the way forward. It replaced a 2 Utility Iron and fought between that and a hybrid as well. It’s not a tee club for me like the 2 utility was but been much better into Par 5s since. Stretched the wedges back to 3 from 4 and added in a 3 iron to be my new safe tee club

5 wood is my only wood, I play the Aerojet and then my next club is a P790 3 iron.

These modern woods go so far I personally don't think a 3 wood is necessary.

They're crazy honestly, I hit a 220m 3 wood (TM Stealth 2+) into the wind the other day after thinning my driver.

I don't even consider myself a long hitter, my 7 iron goes about 150-155m, while my longest shot with the 3 wood is 251m on a simulator

Radspeed Tour 5 wood for me right now.  Before that I was using a very old Titleist 906F, as it filled the distance gap nicely.

I do have a 19* UW coming, so we'll see what happens.

Callaway Rogue SZ.  I played the 5deep for many years before moving into this setup about six months ago.  The Rogue is a little more compact, which I like for sketchier lies.  Can curve both ways with very flat ball flight, so no worries about ballooning.

Only problem is it flies a bit farther than my previous gamer, so now I'm looking at updating my old reliable 3-wood to regain some separation.

5 Wood has been the best addition to my bag.  I used to always have a 2 iron and wanted to hit stingers everywhere.  But the 5 wood is a true fairway finder and it lands oh so softly into greens.

Dang this thread! I saw the gap closing between my T100S 4i and G425 3h this season so went hunting for a 5 wood. Just put Stealth 2 Plus 5 wood on Trackman and was blown away. Weight all the way back, stock Kai’li Red dispersion was as straight as the 3h (ie very straight), but launch was something to behold. High but flat trajectory, peak height 120s, spinning 4200ish. 220ish carry, quite consistent (Tsi2 15* Ventus Blue TR carries about 238-240). Weight all the way forward only brought the window very slightly down, but was not hard to flight it.

Cobra F7 at 17.5 or 18.5.
Kuro Kage 80HY X-Stiff shaft with a .335 tip.
41.25” but I play it choked all the way up so more like 39.75”. The lie angle is super upright at 60*.
I have a 15g and 20g weight in there to increase head weight.

Launches high and goes straight. It plays more like a hybrid, but with the shallow face and deep head of a fairway.

What do you guys see as the advantages to a 5w over a 19* 3-hybrid?  The reason I ask is that the top of my bag is driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, then 4 iron.  I am happy with my setup. I find my Ping G430 3 hybrid stupid easy to hit and goes far enough distance. I don’t feel that I have a big gap, I can fade my 3 wood or choke down to take some distance off.  Just curious what you guys think I could be missing out on. I’m always open to experimenting. 😃

For me it was height coming into a par 5. The hybrid just came in a little too hot.
