Question for ryder cup attendance veterans. We've got the "basic" tickets without any extras. How freely are you allowed to wander around the course and follow groups? Is there significant advantage in getting to the site very early with basic tickets?

Never been except Hazeltine and based on the rough, etc. I’m guessing it could be a tough “follow” at this venue from what I saw on Finch’s video. The advantage early is always getting your seat in a strategic grandstand and for me, sitting in a top corner for views of the hole and potentially others and not having people behind you, lol.

Went to Whistling Straits a couple of years ago.  It was crazy packed everyday. It was a little more “out & back” style layout so the further you walked the less crowded it was.  I walked the hell out of it and followed groups but I’m 6’5” and can see over rows of people.  My crippled Dad hung out in the handicap sections of 1 & 18 and had a great time.  The first tee is a PARTY going out!

Played Marco Simone this spring and was shockingly underwhelmed and unimpressed comparatively.  The facilities....  sucked actually.  The course was blah.  Where it shines is the green complexes.  They are firm, fast & really undulating. With the rough grown out and fairways narrowed it will put a premium on finding the fairway but still offers plenty of risk/reward shots too.  I’m really excited to see how it presents on TV and how differently it will play this month vs. my Spring adventure.  Marco Simone has many more “back & forth” holes and is hilly/sloped enough to get a view of multiple holes from a well-chosen fairway or high corner grand stand seat.  The grandstands were up when I played but I have no idea what they’re going to rope off.

It’s going to be AWESOME !!!

As I understand it the basic tickets don't include grandstands. Or am I mistaken? s*** I'll be there at break of dawn if need be. Only question is whether I'll actually gain something doing that 😄

I am not sure what the situation is with grandstands...it would seem strange that you would be prevented from entering all of the grandstands. I guess there may be some premium grandstands but I would think that it would be pretty harsh to be prevented entry to all. Definitely get there early though! Sunday is slightly better but Friday and Saturday are the worst days you could ever imagine for actually watching golf. Four groups with thousands upon thousands trying to get a glimpse. Accept that you are not going to get the chance to see very much golf and try and find a spot near the start of the course - 1st tee or green, then once the fourth group is gone through, try and find somewhere close to the beginning of the back 9 that has a decent view of the course but also a TV screen.

Atmosphere wise, Ryder Cup cannot be beaten but for actually watching golf, it is the worst.

you are correct, 250 entry fee, and then a 50 euro 'first tee experience' there will be some seats that do not require the extra fee, but no idea how many. Given that the metro in Rome doesnt open till 5.30 and its a 60-70min ride to the course, the earliest you will be there is about 6.30 .

sort of pissed me off that they milk the ticket prices and then expect you to pay extra to sit in a stand! Don't think I'll be able to get into the first tee, but will head upto the first green, second tee.

Luke's picks live

My first impression.  Euros look 9 strong.  The other three look like wildcards who could equally likely crash-and-burn or light it up.  Overall, very strong team in what should be a very pro-Euro partisan environment.  USA has its hands full and then some.

We went to both Hazeltine and Whistling Straits. We had better access, as we were guests of one of the premier sponsors both times.  That said, if you can get there early, one reasonable strategy we found was this:

  • Find a spot between first green and second tee; watch all four matches come through
  • Follow the last match down the 2nd, and keep going until you find a spot to catch the first match coming back in; follow them to 8 green, then park between 8th green and 9th tee and watch the matches come through.
  • Rinse and repeat for the back 9

One mistake is camping out in a grandstand at 17 or 18. Most of the matches don't get that far! For the back nine, if there's a spot that lets you watch 15 or 16, while simultaneously seeing 12 or 13, that's prime viewing territory.

The thing to remember is that except for Sunday, during the foursomes there are only *EIGHT* balls in play on the entire course, and even for four ball, it's only *16*. Contrast this with a regular event, where at any time, there are potentially 72 balls in play to watch.

Attended both Hazeltine and Whistling - we did not have an upgraded tickets, and sat in #1 grand stand both days.  Has that changed?  For the AM session if you don't get there super early you will not get in the main grand stand on hole 1.  We did pay for access to the International Pavillion and we were very glad we did.

There was an email this week from the RC regarding transportation to/from the course- it looks like a potential cluster bomb.

How can you say this?

The Italians are known the world over for their efficiency and organizational skills!

Btw, got a 'camera ticket' in Italy in the early 2000s...was in the wrong toll lane and figured they'd send me a bill.

They did, but it took 6 years to get mailed to me : )

Wife and I have weekly passes and First Tee tickets on Friday and Sunday - plan for those two days is to take Uber to the nearest park/ride (PR3) and then get on the early shuttles. Since we have the week passes I'm honestly not that worried if we only go for a couple hours and then bail out. Its honestly one of the reasons I bought the week passes so I didnt feel guilty about it.

My wife and I planned a trip to the Ryder Cup and bought full week passes way back when everything first went on sale in 2021. Long story short, we are going to Rome for the week but she had a college friend schedule a very small wedding in Paris (bride and groom's second wedding) on short notice for Saturday night; so while we are both going to the Ryder Cup on Friday (and potentially Thursday since we have full week passes), she is skipping out on Saturday and Sunday.

End result, I'm looking for anybody else that is going to be at the Ryder Cup and is interested in meeting up on Saturday and/or Sunday. I'm Team USA but I promise to not be obnoxious if you are Team Europe!

On a related note, I've also now got an extra ticket for the Vista Grandstand on each of Saturday and Sunday that I'm not using if anybody is interested in purchasing. The whole ticket process/ secondary market is a total fiasco (allegedly because of Italian anti-scalping laws I guess) so you'll need to have a ticket to get into the grounds Saturday and/or Sunday but I'm happy to sell you the hospitality access for just what I paid for it (~400 EURO a day). I guess need to get this figured out before Monday since that seems to be the assignment deadline (I've avoided assigning any of our tickets so far).

TL;DR: I'm looking for people to meet up with at the Ryder Cup on Saturday/Sunday since I'm now flying solo those days. Also have Vista Grandstand access for one person available for those days (but need to get that figured out sooner rather than later I guess).

Although this was probably meant to be sarcasm, it is true in a way. Being from Austria, I have visited our southern neighbours dozens of times and my experience is this:
Things might nor work like they are meant to work, but they work nevertheless. Somehow, without anyone knowing why, they work.
I prefer this a lot to countries in which things either work exactly like they are supposed to work or not at all (errr, errr, USA, Germany)

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Don't know,  but,  I'm eagerly awaiting onsite reports on the beer pricing structure.

If it’s anything like Serie A soccer, it should be cheap and scarce.

Went to matches in Rome, Milan and Turin last month.  Very little drinking and eating in the stands, with few concessions.  Lines weren’t too bad, and non existent during actually play.

People seemed to do their drinking and eating at the dozens of food vendors surrounding the stadium.

It'll be tough to replace Ian poulter but I hope someone brings his enthusiasm and fist bumping. Go Europe!

Ryder cup highlights right now on GC and man patty reed was also great to watch in the ryder cup. Will also miss his style this year.

I just hope these guys bring energy (and some chirping), the snedekers and kuchars of the golf world don't even wiggle the needle

Poulter wasn't very good in the last two RCs, in fact, it was a terrible pick from Harrington. I don't see it as an issue unless you are winning points the histrionics are almost irrelevant.

RC spectators guide/map seems to indicate a lot of food options - honestly I'd be stunned if there were not.

Regarding Italy:  perhaps my favorite country in which to travel. Incredible food. Warm, friendly and fun loving people. Endless beautiful sights.

Was just newly exploring Piedmont by bicycle last month. Over the top great. Can’t recall when I was treated that well in, say, Paris.   Or New York.   Now a big fan of Barolo, Barbaresco, and Barela wine too.

Yeah, things aren’t alway efficient, but that’s part of the loving-life charm. Sit down, drink another cappuccino.

Besides, anyone ridden Amtrak lately? On been stuck in yet another France transportation strike?

No but got stuck on a crap bus from Innsbruck to Brixen thanks to another fantastic Italian rail strike. With you on the rest though, Italy is absolutely wonderful.
