Would a high school team use an indoor sim facility? College?

Recommended Posts

Doing some research for a business plan for someone, and one of the ideas put down was possibly selling time to high school or college teams.  There would be north of 3 bays(total tbd) and they could rent out the entire facility for 2 hours.  My question is, though, would any of them *actually* do this?  I recall doing a mini case study where an idea was presented, many great things and numbers added up great, but the problem was, the "customers" had no interest in it.  I'm just concerned this could be a case similar to that.  Figured this would be a good place to ask.

(Note that high school & college teams would not be the target market overall, just an additional revenue source if they actually used it.)

That seems like it would be very location dependent.   Going by our high school, I can't see them renting it out regularly.   HS Golf has a short season, an weather is mostly golf friendly.   It's a public school with a very competitive golf team, with full access to a private course and their top notch practice facilities in season.   They don't have much or any of a budget for renting out a facility on a regular basis.

Maybe donating space to the team when practice is rained out to build some good will and exposure and offering golf team members a good monthly rate for the 3-5pm window when they're done school, but adults are still working could be a revenue stream?   Maybe some private schools might pay, but no idea.

Colleges will mostly have their own indoor facility.   I suppose if there was a d3 school nearby with a bit of a golf budget, they may be interested.   That seems like an unlikely scenario though.

Something more viable might be to find some swing coaches with good Junior golfers looking for a place for winter lessons for their students.

I coach at a competitive public high school and can echo much of what @TroyB123 had to say. Mainly, we wouldn't have the budget for it as a luxury for rainy days when we already get range/course access donated to us from our local country club partner. As official practices are off limits outside of the season there really isn't a market for me to officially rent out the space for any period of time even if I did have the budget.

Also, as launch monitor technology gets more accurate and affordable more and more of my golfers already have their own launch monitors and some even have simulators in their garages/yards/sheds (this season out of my top 6, 3 have sim/hitting setups at home (1 EyeXo, 1 skytrak, 1 garmin r10)). Also on the affordability front, we used the proceeds from our annual fundraiser (charity golf tournament) and have purchased an Eye mini thanks to their recent sale... we already have 3 net returns and 3 fiberbuilt mat's for indoor work and now we'll be close to our own sim capabilities after a little more fundraising to add a laptop/tv/stand.

Totally agree about finding a good swing coach to partner with...you could also set up some junior winter sim leagues, have drop in range time, etc...my kids would be all over that kind of stuff if it were local and easily accessible after school.

Although really in our area the most successful golf sim locations are as much a local bar/watering hole as they are a golf sim business...so get a liquor license!

+1 for the same comments.  The secret has been out of bag, so most of the kids in the states that have a need probably already have a setup.

We put in our skytrak in 2018 and then upgraded the following year to a GC2.  Most of the guys I know from that community have kids as well coming up with tech.

If you listen to some college coaches they're investing as well in their facilities as their budgets permit.

Locally we have a PGA superstore and they have some special membership that you can rent time.  You pay X and get a certain numbers of hours on the simulator per month.  Just check the site don't see the details but basically they have 5 bays in the back.

Early on I was teaming with someone who ran a couple of bowling alleys.  Typically they have dead space.  I was thinking one bay.  You could train the the employees how to run it.  Then you could rent out to the normal traffic and hopefully team with local pros who might need some business in the cold months.
