hey guys, i attached a video of a few swings. if you guys could critique me swing i would appreciate it as i am working on my swing in the off season. I am going for a more one-plane swing, and i just started applying it recently, so any help towards that direction would be most beneficial. I have only been golfing for 3 years so please be gentle, i usually shoot mid 70's to low 80's. Some of the early videos are dark due to the higher frame rate, but the last couple are brighter.

Thanks To All

Well, I'm not an instructor but I'll get the ball rolling :dntknw: First off, you've got a lot of good stuff happening in your swing, and obviously create a tremendous amount of club speed :drinks:

When you talk about changing to more of a "one-plane swing" I'm assuming you're talking about the swing popularized in recent months by Jim Hardy. I believe he has some key fundamentals - i.e. it's a very core-driven (rotational) swing where the shoulders stay on the same, relatively steep plane throughout the swing with the arms staying more-or-less on the same plane as the shoulders and the club path being more in-to-out-to-in through impact. I can definitely see aspects of the one-plane swing, as well as remnants of the two-plane swing in your swing.

Using the 7-iron video, the thing that really jumps out at me is how your shoulder plane changes during your swing, IMO. If you look at your swing halfway back (arms level) you can see how the shoulder plane is relatively flat, pointing to an area about 10-15 feet to the right of the ball. This is very much a two-plane position, IMO. Now, when you look at your shoulder plane halfway through the follow-through you can see that your shoulder plane is now much steeper, pointing about 2 feet to the right of the ball, and you end up with a very high finish.

Because your shoulder plane is so flat to start, it looks like you have to lift your arms early (two-plane), but then you do connect your left arm to your chest late in the backswing (one-plane). But because your shoulder plane is so flat here you have to tilt your right shoulder down during the downswing to get back on plane. Unlike the two-planer who often times uses a hip-slide towards the target to dip the shoulder, it looks like to me that you do it by changing your spine angle - dropping your head a good 5-6 inches down during your downswing. This results in the steep shoulder plane and high finish IMO. If I had to guess, I'd say that you block a lot of shots right and hook a lot of shots left.

I would say the best thing for you to work on would be your set up. Get into a more athletic position - a little more knee flex, bent at the hips a little more, with your weight more centered (it appears to me that you have your weight out over your toes too much). This should allow you to have a steeper shoulder plane going back and allow your left arm to stay connected throughout the backswing. If you can get to the top with a steeper shoulder plane and connected, then all you have to do is "swing left" using the rotation of your hips and core (which you have plenty of) to drive the arms.

Once again, I could be totally off-base here but at least I might generate some more input

See oneplanegolfswing.com for good info on the one plane swing.

ok, i will email the vids in a little while tonight, i don't have time right now. thank you.

also , thanks pole position for the analysis, i agree with what you said, i never noticed how upright my address was until i saw it on video. also, do you think that my clubhead should be a little more outside of my hands on the takeaway?

thanks everybody

The clubhead position looks OK to me for a one-plane swing. I'm not an expert on the one-plane swing, but I think the position you're striving for when the club is parallel to the ground in the backswing is one where the left arm is more connected to the chest and the clubhead is tracing the shaft plane generated at address. Bringing the club back outside of the hands with the left arm not connected is more of a two-plane move, IMO. Because your so upright at address with a relatively flat shoulder plane you're not very connected coming back, IMO. Again, one of those two-plane remnants. So instead of bringing the clubhead back more outside the hands, bring the hands back more inside the clubhead by keeping the left arm connected.

I must say it's amazing how you trace the shaft plane with your clubhead coming down. If you could get rid of that transitional move - steepening your spine angle by dipping your head - by already having that steeper spine angle at address and the top you'll become much more consistant, IMO.

The first video downloaded for me fine last night.

I definitely think your set up could use a little tweaking. And if you also tape a side view of your grip we could even better analyze your swing. I think you remember everything we talked about last night. If you still need some more help just let me know. Good luck with your Level 1.
