Most used iron shafts on tour appear to be Tour issue x100 and project x 6.5

Recommended Posts

From my understand the project x ls a newer model to the project x.

Why haven't more players gravitated towards the ls?

Talk may suggest new profile, but I doubt much has been done to PX profile.  It's a great shaft for fast tempo players; I played PX 6.0 then 5.5 for sixteen + years and have 5.5 in my backup set of 620 MB irons.  The same is true with the TT Tour Issue X100.  Only, there's a big difference in those shaft profiles and the people that play them.

What I like about PX, the ball quickly reaches the apex then flatly travels the distance before dropping; whereas TI X100 gradually climbs over the distance, reaches apex, then drops.

As for gravitating to..., Tour players do NOT like changing iron shafts.  They change Driver shafts and putters kinda often, but NO TOUCHY irons.  I know tour guys that bought multiple sets of iron shafts to insure they have the same shafts for years to come.  I am the same way, only the aging process has me trying all sorts of shafts to find what works the aging process.

Guess steel iron shaft tech is fairly basic (compared to graphite). Find something you love and I doubt anything would come along and blow it out of the water.

I switched to Dynamic Gold 120s this season and they've been an absolute revelation - genuinely couldn't see another steel shaft giving me anything better. Same for Professionals, find what works and hits the number and stick with it.

You can't reinvent the wheel.

Dynamic Gold X100 has been around forever. It feels solid. The results are there.

Project X offers the same stability with MAYBE a little bit flatter flight, a slightly different feel with the stiffer handle section.

They both work. What else is needed?

Just went through a long overdue iron fitting. Had played s300 forever and needed to go to x-stiff. X100 was a fairly quick "no". Project X 6.5 was fine..didn't love it but could play it. The LS 6.5 ended up being the one. Just felt great through the shot and dispersion the tightest

This "review" means nothing as we all swing the club differently, but I'm impressed by the LS and very excited to put it in play

Tour iron play is about hitting a precise number. This generation of golfers all grew up playing dg, px, and some kbs and can hit there numbers with the shafts the grew up playing.

I think we may see the next generation (kids that are 12-18 yr old) start to use more px ls, MMT, etc.

Agree with the comments above about iron results for tour players being about predictability and consistency. They have all the power they need and can control spin and trajectory way beyond what us amateurs can. So there isn't a lot to improve.

And not a lot that carries over to us amateurs either. The plus side is we have a LOT more options for iron shafts than we had 20-30 years ago.  So it's a lot easier to find something that's a fit for your swing.  The downside (or harsh reality) is you need to be fit to figure out what works best for YOUR swing.

But that's where something like the MIzuno Shaft Optimizer can help tremendously.  Three swings and you'll get a list of 3-5 shafts that are a great starting point.

Agree with the comments above that once you find something that fits your swing speed and ball flight performance, stick with it. This game is hard enough without adding a ton of variables.  Though I'm trying really hard to not go down that path. I love the Nippon 105's in my iron set. Hit them great, feel great, etc.

But the results of my MSO session keep sticking in my head, lol....
