Next Ryder Cup USA Captain

As much as it behooves me, I am of the strong opinion that the next Ryder Cup captain for both home and away should be Tiger. No one is more dedicated to preparation and motivation to win than Woods. After what I saw in Rome, Tom Watson had the right idea way back when but just couldn't present it the right way to the players he had, plus Phil wasn't exactly in Watson's camp to begin with. Tiger on the other hand doesn't need to be a great communicator but has the strong desire and respect of these players.

You think Bjorn would get a 2nd shot at being the RC Captain? He was the Euro captain in 2018 in France.

Yes, the Ryder Cup is a game, but it's grown to be David against Goliath war; who's strong, who's weak; Euro's again showed the world that David can beat the hell out of Goliath.

can you really be considered a goliath if everyone knows how to beat you. all they have to do is have the match in their colosseum.

On the European side I would not expect Molinari for 2025 Bethpage.  I would fricking love Miguel Angel Jiminez to be captain there.  He is a pretty tough character and may be one of the only guys we have to not get phased by the likey NY crowd abuse. Not sure if he would want it. Not sure who else we have suitable.  Who were the Euro VCs this year?

Jimenez is too far removed from the current set of players to be a captain.

My bet is on Donald again or one of the Molinaris.

Jimenez is an excellent choice but he is more than a bit abrasive and that doesn't work well with this generation of players.  I have caddied in his group quite a few times over the years and if he's having an off day, he can get fiery.  Think Hatton times 3 or 4.

Yeah agreed probably not the most diplomatic choice and also as one of the other posters said he is a little to far removed from the current players

It would be awesome though!

I guess the candidates from the Euo VCs this time around were the Molinaris and Nicholas Colsarts.  I imagine no one in the USA knows who Colsarts is unless they can remember him playing at Ryder Cup in Medinah.  Francesco is a good player and a major winner but somewhat introverted and I cannot help but feel it would be a similar style to ZJ captaincy.  If Tiger is going to be captain at Bethpage  I'd suggest Luke Donald sign up for another 2 years but he understandably may not want to do so.

if not for LIV, I'd  suggest G McDowell would be a great choice for Bethpage or perhaps wait until Adere Manor in 2027.  Justin Rose will be a great captain in future years.  Anyone except Westwood...

Euro's would be wise to pick the Molinari brothers if Donald doesnt want to do it again.

Edoardo is already the stats and matchup guru breaking stuff down so its a perfect next move.

Edoardo Molinari, the stats ‘guru’ behind Europe’s Ryder Cup win | The Independent

One team gave their guys 5 weeks off and another team spent months preparing 60+ scenarios for how it could go. Simulating pairings, matchups and analyzing data from every angle.

The US will pick some humpty like Stewart Cink.

I hear ya, and understand its influence, but where the match is held should NOT be a factor, for professionals.  It is a fact that in the majority of sports, media individuals discuss alleged home court advantage, as if it were the rationale they would use to justify their defeat.

I thought tour players were professionals.  I suppose recent generations have watered down what being a professional means.  If a person knows he's likely to lose, cause of where the competition is held, he/she should not attend.

In NY? Gotta be TW

Nobody else got the chops

There’s only one guy any of these spoiled wanna bees will listen to when he says,

“Listen to me”

And that’s Tiger. Or he can call you a clown and send you home and you can’t do nothing! 🤣

He got 10x more wins, more majors, and more 💰. And that’s that.

TW just hang out in cart and talk on walkie talkie to Charlie Woods (Vice Captain)

Charlie be like, “ok Dad, Roger that….Hey! Jordan, my Dad says stop putting like you’re wearing oven mitts”

🤣

US

2025 - Cink

2027 - TW

My reasoning is pretty simple. We don't really need a force at captain to win in New York. We'll have a huge home field advantage due to the crowd and the ability to set up the course to favor the home team.  Cink, Freddie, Justin Leonard, doesn't matter. Just take someone who's been a VC and listen to the analytics firm on course set up.

Regarding 2027, I don't know if TW will be a good Capt or not but he does have the respect of this generation of players. If you believe that is of value (I do) then I think you save that ammunition for an away game. Plus, having a general idea of how Tiger is wired, he'd likely relish in the challenge of doing something that hasn't been done in ages.

Europe

2025 - F. Molinari w/ Rose as VC

2027 - Rose w/ Lowry as VC

This assumes that the Saudi deal fizzles out and that the PGAT and DPWT move forward w/ Endeavor et al. If the deal actually goes through, I wouldn't be surprised to see Stetson/Westwood/Sergio/Poulter back in the mix.

In fairness to recent generations, I'd argue that they have become increasingly more professional than prior generations.  I'm old enough to play the Sr Tour and I'm ok with some nostalga but objectively, todays player is more professional than ever.  Let's be real, these guys today are on a different level working on their games, their fitness, analyzing data, validating strategy, you name it.  Sure, guys from my generation to yours were dedicated professionals during their time but their lifestyles consisted of equal parts golf and equal parts steak dinners, martinis, scotch, bourbon and cigarettes. The days of eating some bacon, drinking a cup of black coffee, hitting a couple bags of balls, rolling some putts, lighting up a cig and heading to the first tee to win a golf tournament are long over.

Agree completely. But there may be something to the older generation constantly playing money games in between the scotch and cigarettes 😉

Whoever is picked to be the next US captain, there first hire should be a stats guy like Stagner or Broadie (or both) to do the same thing for the US team that Edoardo Molinari did for the Euros. That is gather and analyze massive amounts of data on all of the potential candidates for the US and European squads and compare it to the characteristics of Bethpage Black.
