Adapter insertion depth

Recommended Posts

Quick question; I'm not sure if I have an issue or not but it appears the person who installed an adapter to my driver shaft got 7/8-15/16" insertion depth into the adapter.

Is that going to be enough? It's a PXG Adapter so it's nominal depth is (I think) 1-3/16" to to bottom..

The shaft was 46" as I hadn't cut it down to size yet and that was how I determined this. Am I splitting hairs here?

The shaft has to bottom out on the adapter. Otherwise, you could have a shaft failure.

If the shaft length was 46” new without adapter, it should be just over 46”. I don’t know what the measurement would be from the bottom of the adapter to the end of the adapter. Maybe 3/8” - 1/2”for the cog part?
The shaft is not going to measure 47 3/16”. It will be 46” plus the depth of the end of the adapter to the outside bottom of the adapter.

Sorry but not true.   Insertion depth can effect the strength of the glue joint and short insertion depths could result in that joint failing and the head coming off - but it's not by itself going to increase the risk of the shaft failing.

Yes, generally that's roughly the amount I've seen.  I've not used a PXG but all the major OEM adapters I've measured, it varies from roughly 3/8" to 5/8".

If you're right about the insertion depth, it's hard to say since there are too many variables to be sure:  strength of the epoxy, quality of the prep work, etc...     It might be enough for a slower swing speed player but my personal opinion is that you want at least a full 1" of insertion depth to get a strong enough glue joint.

BUT, the fact that it's not all the way in is a very suspicious with respect to the quality of the work.  So I'd be likely to pull it even if I thought it was enough insertion depth.   It's possible they might have used one of those tip weights that take up 1/4" of the hosel - but I can't think of any other good reason not to get full insertion.  e.g. It could mean a poor tip prep job or maybe an incomplete cleaning of the adapter if it wasn't new - or maybe they had some air trapped and it pushed the adapter partially off before the glue set.     And if part of the job was messed up, what else might have they messed up that you can't notice?

I watched him prep it and it looked like he got enough depth as I was watching and I felt like he got enough epoxy on the joint (used microbeads as well), and the shaft is clean at the end so no evidence of it slipping out exposing any of the area where the paint/surface coating was removed.

He used the longer set epoxy since I wasn't going to be using it for a bit (currently partially blind in one eye...... annoying but temporary). Yet, the measurement (assuming it actually was 46" and not a bit longer) shows 7/8" and I wasn't smart enough to measure before taking it in (it never occurred to me to do that).

It was a $60 shaft so part of me figures I could just replace it if it broke.... but obviously it bothers me....

He actually did it pro-bono which surprised me (must have took pity for the eye problem).

They state 46" Across the board..... so I guess I have a decision to make.

What is the risk of damage on a pull and installation of a new adapter?

Depends on the skill and experience of the person doing the pulling.    But it's really not very high at all for a knowledgeable builder.

I might take it back to the original builder to see what he has to say.  If nothing else it's a separate pair of eyes to double check your measurements.
