Largest footprint / shallowest 3 wood in past ~5 years to elevate the ball

BJG718

Recommended Posts

Hi there-

I'm a lower handicap player who tends to hit a flatter ball with woods.  I've had a Heavenwood in the bag since Callaway Big Bertha (circa 2015) and it's been my magic 245 club - not quite drop and stop but close.  For comparison, my current 3 wood is the same model.  I'm looking for a large volume, shallow 3 wood head with no draw bias that will help me really launch it off the deck.  I wouldn't mind launching it higher off the tee to sit a bit softer in a fairway and to have a bit more usability into par 5s.

Thanks in advance!

A 16 deg. 3 wood or a 4 wood is going to do what you want better than any shallow faced 3 wood of lower loft.  But if you insist on a stronger lofted fairway wood pick up a Ping TiSi Tec 14 deg. 3 wood.  Very easy to hit from any decent lie assuming you have the correct shaft for your swing.  As long as any other fairway wood you’ll find.  The following is are JX hosel codes-

RX3 - 4 Degrees Upright - Square
RU3 - 2 Degrees Upright - Square
RS3 - Standard - Square
RF3 - 2 Degrees Flat - Square
S10 - Standard - 1 Degree Open
S20 - Standard - 2 Degrees Open
F10 - 2 Degrees Flat - 1 Degree Open
F20 - 2 Degrees Flat - 2 Degrees Open

Any of the bottom 4 are fade biased depending on how much fade bias you need.  As of last year Ping still had a few open and flat JX hosels available for reshafting.

Good advice.  I think you are right re: adding loft. I'm left-handed so options are slightly more limited.

Also, coincidentally, I picked up a Ping Tisi 14* on a whim and played it for a few months in 2016 or 2017.  The club was automatic and a reg shaft I think helped me add some spin/height.  I cracked the face - otherwise I'd probably still be playing it.  I understood that was a common issue with those clubheads.

I have the Ping G430 Max but I would think the 400/410/425 all would do just as well. I am a fan of the older, spinnier fairway woods as the flight is more stable. I have lofted up in the past to play modern FW's but prefer the extra control and spin the ping produces. I don't really see much distance loss. I just see more consistent distance (250-265) versus the lower spinning fairways where I get the random 280 yard heater.

I was going to say the Tight Lies fairway woods are very shallow as the ball barely looks like it can fit on the face but they do not have a large footprint.  I was buying them brand new for $20 though so they are well worth a shot as I find them to be really really good especially out of the rough because of the super high initial launch.  That being said they are almost useless in windy conditions but this is true of any high launching club.

Ping G400 Stretch it's 193cc but 13° of loft so it may be too much for fairway landings but it's big and shallow.

Callaway Paradym X is a nice shallow option and a bit more stretched, I'm in that myself but has a slight draw bias, could look at regular Paradym but it's smaller.

Last one for something new is the Stealth 2 fairway, it's 185cc, neutral flight. It's a really good fairway that was runner up for me in testing.

Ping G425 5 wood turned down. Ive used this as a "4" wood the past three seasons and I don't see myself getting out of it any time soon. Its great off the tee on tight tee shots or shorter, and also launches high from the fairway or rough. I have it turned down from 17.5 to 16.5. I'm no exaggerator in regards to distance but its about a 250-260 club for me with 260 being off of a tee

As others have mentioned, many Pings would fit the bill.

Also, take a look at the Titleist TSR1 15* fairway wood, but put a heavier shaft, and maybe more weight in the head.  The weight is positioned to aid higher launch.

I find Ping and Callaway have the shallowest 3 woods that get nice elevation.  Another option is the Wilson Dynapower 3 wood.  Much cheaper and has great reviews.  There is a left handed one on eBay for $215 new.

I know it's older than you're looking for, but the Tour Edge XCG4 woods strike me as checking every other box you listed. Shallow, wide face, big body.

My first thought was similar to Adam, though I was thinking of the XCG7 or the E8 from Tour Edge.  The "standard" model for each, not the Beta model, though the E8 Beta is pretty shallow.

The Cobra King LTD is pretty shallow, but I don't know that it hits the ball terribly high, or with enough spin to meet BJG's needs.  Also likely doesn't meet the overall size need...

I gave my pick for what  the title asks for above. But. If you want to launch it High , shallow isn’t ALWAYS the ticket.  Look at cobra king variants.  The ones with rails.  They have deep ish faces. But really low cog. Because of the rails. And the rails make them easy from the deck. If you can’t hit them high. You can’t hit anything high.

Yup, I was going to mention XCG7. The 4 wood still goes 230-240 if I put a good swing on it. Like swinging a pancake on a stick.

For low profile just about any Ping or Callaway works. So does the Wilson D9 or the 2023 DynaPower, which is an excellent 3 wood.

I ran across this when I was peeping 3w's earlier this year.  I never gave it a chance and regret it.  But they didn't have any demos to try.  But, the Tour Edge E723 fairway to me looks like exactly what you are looking for.

Paradym lofted down will give you a slightly open or square face.  I have the 15 turned down to 14 and it is high launching, maybe too high for me, but sounds right for you.

I'm looking for the opposite.  A little less volume, still sitting low but weight forward to keep spin down.  Seems to be the weight forward options are still large and deep faces.

I picked up a new old stock Tight Lies (2021 model I think) that is 16 degrees and I can get it high. It isn’t fancy but on eBay they are cheap enough to take a chance on. Just search “2021 tight lies” and you should still be able to find new ones in shrink wrap. I love mine.
