KBS $ Taper Getting X or S to S+

I need advice.  Want a set of Srixon ZX5 MK II but don’t want to pay the extra $400 to get after market $ Taper S+ installed.  I asked KBS if I should request a soft stepped X or a hard stepped S and their response was a bit puzzling.  Here is what they said “For the best results, you will want to soft step these iron shafts to get them closer to an S+ playability. If we hard step the shafts, then they will be stiffer than an x-stiff shaft”. So a hard stepped stiff is stiffer than a x-stiff? HELP!!!

That's a strange response as hard stepping doesn't doesn't stiffen up the shaft that much.  I would honestly go with the X flex ss x 1.

Consider your weight preference since SS 130X will be closer to 130 and HS 120S will be closer to 120. Personally I would decide based on this. I currently play $Taper 125

 I agree with this. In most cases, soft stepping makes more sense than hard stepping. $ Taper uses the same 37.5" shaft for 9 and PW. If you hard step you will have the same shaft for 8,9, and PW. Soft stepping will give you a unique shaft length for each iron. Change in flex when stepping 1 X is small.

I wish this was easier. Would love the $ Taper S+ but will probably end up with old faithful DG120 X100 ss 1x.

@Mookie91 have you at least tested $Taper 120? It is much stiffer in the handle than DG120 X100. I have DG120 X100 straight in no SS in ZX7 and they feel like a wet noodle in the handle of the mid through long irons compared to either $Taper 120 or 125. You should really try to hit $Taper and DG120 side by side if you're considering them.

I have not hit the $ Tapet to date.  Was always a DGX100 guy and enjoyed the feel of the KBS Tour 130X.  Now with most manufactures going to mid weight shafts, I naturally progressed into DG 120 X100.  What I’m looking for a little KBS experiment that will give me that OG Tour feel in a mid weight shaft and some stability.  Based on your comments I may end up with the 120 straight in for the heck of it.

@Mookie91 considering its generally an upcharge shaft I definitely recommend testing first if possible. It sort of sits between PX and KBS Tour in feel. Or KBS Tour with a less pronounced kick. In 120 its probably one of the stiffest shafts available at that weight (likely only behind C-Taper 120). It's different than DG 120 X100 though, if you like that one.

I’ve always played DG with the exception of Super Peening Blues for a couple of years. Just looking to get a bit more kick feel (KBS Tour) but keep stability in a 120ish weight shaft. I’m 1/2” over so swing weight isn’t typically a big issue.

$-taper was a more stable KBS Tour that launched just a hair lower for me.  It's one of those shafts you either love or hate because the EI profile is different from the KBS Tour.  If the $-taper doesn't work out for you I'd recommend the KBS Tour V 120.  It's more linear than either KBS Tour or $-taper but very stable.
