How bad is your Bad Round?

SurfDuffer

Recommended Posts

Just a different way of looking at how good of a golfer you are.  People always want to talk about their best scores........but how bad are your bad scores?  Minimizing those bad scores and how bad they are may be the better way to look at things.  Just a thought

Your thoughts?

This same thought actually popped into my head a few weeks ago. Had a really tough stretch from beginning of season until about July. Played with a buddy and I shot a 98, which was an awful score for me. Made some changes that worked very well and started playing good golf. Played with same guy twice in late October and shot 70 and 78. He asked what was different? Part of my answer was that I was able to manage my mistakes much better. Afterwards I thought about the two rounds and that 78, which coincidentally was my worst round after September 1, was as bad as I could have possibly scored that round. I’m sure the possibility of the guy that shot 98 taking possession of my body again is there but I feel as if my worst golf would probably be somewhere low 80’s and I can live with that.

I am currently completely lost in a swing change (like topping a few balls a round and hitting my driver about 20 yds shorter) and I shot what I felt like was my floor this past week, which was an 81 from 6,500 yds. Add maybe 2 shots to that for additional lost ball or two and I *think* my floor at my club is an 83.

My worst round this year was an 85.  It was at Anaheim Hills which is very narrow and has lots of OB.  My ball striking was off and I put a few balls into the trees and bushes.  Strokes add up quick.  I played at Coto de Caza, North course on Sunday and lost a couple balls.  Ball striking was off as well.  Felt like one of the worst rounds of the year but managed to card an 80 due to putting lights out.  Seems like the OC courses kill me, lol.

If I get four or more doubles or blow-up holes, that is a bad round for me. Usually, I get 1-2 of them and I am ok with that. This 2023, for some weird reason, I racked up doubles or more that come from bad around the green play. Just a handful of times did I blow up from a tee shot. I have been really conservative off the tee and it yielded me succes. But the around the green stuff. Ugh! Weird and frustrating.

When I realized the trend, it made me even worse because I get nervous when I am around the green and the thoughts of blowing up creeps up into my head. lol

Thankfully, my scoring is not very erratic, except if my bones are not cooperating, hence the stinky 81 the other day.   Back in September, 82 was my worse rd in years.

Really depends. If I’m halfway healthy (e.g. no wrist issues) and under some sort of pressure (even like a small skins game) something like 75-76 would be my floor. For reference, in 2023, I shot one 76 and 2 75's.

If I’m out for a round purely to screw around with a swing change or new theory, it could easily be 95 if I was to play 18 (I always play 9 if I’m testing something!). For reference, in 2023, I had 9 hole scores of 46,47 and 48 while "testing"

Got things pretty consistent this year, most rounds were 80-83, but had my worst round of the year last week, turned cold, was around 45 deg, just wasn’t feeling it & shot a 90, so that would hopefully be my absolute floor.

Was so close to breaking 80 this year, had a few rounds with a 38 on the front, but always had something, a bad drive, 3 putt, etc on the back so best round was 80.

Next year will be the one!!

Oh Anaheim Hills. I don't like the course. I've shot my past 10+ rounds in the 70's all while in the midst of going through a major swing overhaul which I've been working my a** off to get more comfortable with. Then I play at Anaheim Hills and shoot an 83 this past weekend. My ball striking was great honestly. It was course mis-management and not knowing what clubs to hit. Sure, lack of discipline on my part a bit, but geez I hated the layout. Sharp dog legs everywhere. Small greens with stupid pin placements. I haven't played there in years and I realized after playing there last weekend it's because I don't like the layout, especially when you don't have familiarity with the course. I over shot a couple greens and that added multiple strokes to my score because it's basically impossible to get up and down from some areas because of where the pins were placed and the fast green slopes.

Dumb course in my opinion but whatever, I'm sure many people like it. I won't be going there any time soon.

game has reached a point where its very hard for me to ever shoot higher than 85 have kind of leveled out around 75-78 with the occasional low 80's

Figure I will always make 9 pars and almost never make doubles so just comes down to how those other 9 shake out. Trying to get comfortable with this notion so I can actually start putting the pedal down and stop waiting for bad shots to come, but instead attack and try and get lower and lower.

Upper 70's and I'm bummed and wondering what is happening.  I hover around par and can go low from time to time.  My worst round of 2023 was the 81 carded at Squire Creek.  I had SEVEN three putts with a decent ball striking day.  It still haunts me. 👻

In fact, because of that freaky round I focused hard on putting by getting lessons, learning aim point, and putting in the time on the green.

I am not sure it is good measure. Our worst rounds can have allot of bad and odd things happening and maybe not have anything to do with potential.

If I working on something with my swing, I will commit to playing for a round and ignore the score. It can be really bad. If however you told me I need to shoot a low score that day, I would have a very different approach.

What I would look at might be my high score in competitive stroke play as some measure of talent, but even that can have some really odd things happen that really don't lend the round being to indicative of what I can shoot.

I've played the course twice and it's definitely not my favorite layout.  My least favorite course in this area is Hidden Hills.  Gorgeous views but it's very penal and ball striking must be on point or you will lose a ton of balls even on a slight mishit.  The greens were ultra slow when I played there earlier this year which really threw me for a loop as putting is the best part of my game by far.  I'm talking carpet like greens.

For 2023 my average. score is 81.1 with 53 rounds posted.

My four worst rounds were 88, 88, 88, and 91.

So I would say my worst rounds are when I shoot 7 or more strokes over my Index.

Interesting side note: I've put in a lot of work on my game this past year and as I've become a better golfer, I've had a handful of rounds that resembled shooting 88 in terms of ball striking, GIRs, etc. but somehow managed an 81 or 82. That's when I knew I was getting better at golf!

My goal is to always break 90 which lately hasn’t been happening.  Today I had 4 pars, two 7’s and an 8 to shoot 94 which has been my average lately.  If I could just make a couple more pars and eliminate the 7’s and 8’s I should be there.

The older I get, the worse my bad rounds get and the more they diverge from the mean.

Even still, when I am healthy, and it's summertime, I can go 20 or 30 rounds in a row without a single differential more than a +5 or so — on my home course.

there was a time five or six years ago at 50 years old where I had 40 rounds in a row and my worst was a +4 differential, I believe. So everything between -5 or six and +4. That was some steady golf for me. Probably will never see those days again.

My best round this year was 67 -6 and my worst round was 85 These were on two different courses though.

67 was at Mammoth Dunes

85 was at Olde Stone

If you compare my best round at Olde Stone 73 vs 85 it comes down to 1 thing, getting off the tee. The course is the most brutal course I’ve ever played the minute you miss the fairways and the fairways aren’t gigantic. My driver is my worst and best club at times.

Interesting topic.  A mentor of mine called this “ ceiling and the floor”.  Said to always make sure to raise the floor anytime you raised the ceiling.  That raising the floor ( your worst rounds ) was more important than raising the ceiling .  As the ceiling will raise on its own - eventually - if the floor is raised enough.    Kind of an up/down mind  teaser to me .

my worst for 4/5 years now is 80-81  and those rounds always come if I have a bad front 9 and play for broke on the back.  I’ll either shoot 32 or 40 on the back.  Thats out of frustration.  And it’s rare.   If it were an event I wouldn’t play that way.

99% of my rounds are 72-76 and that’s playing around 45-50 rounds a year. It’s hard to stay sharp scoring wise not playing anymore than that.

A bad round is 78-80.  I’ve shot 83–85 a handful of times this year and every single time it was a morning round after drinking a bit too much whiskey the day/night prior and trying to play golf sober and hungover. 😬 I literally turn into a 12 handicap.
