Interesting T100 discovery during Disassembly

As the title states, I came across something interesting while disassembling some black T100 irons that I purchased pre-owned from PGA Superstore in Duluth, GA. I started with the 4 iron and starting working my way through pulling the heads off of the Tour-V 120 X shafts that came with the irons. Once I pulled the shaft off the 8 iron head, I went to clean out the leftover epoxy from inside the clubhead and noticed my drill attachment went way further down into the head than normal. I measured and there is an extra 5/8" long opening in the 8 iron and PW head compared to the other clubs in the set. I've attached a picture of the 8 iron so you can see the extra depth I am talking about. I also included a side-by-side picture of the same 8 iron head in the normal silver finish. These are the Gen2 T100 irons.

I also included side-by-side pictures of the number 8 that is on the sole of the irons as they do look different. All of this got me thinking, did I buy a counterfeit set of Black T100 irons? All the other numbers look similar. I am just trying to figure this out before I waste any more time trying to assemble these black T100 irons with the shafts I need. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Looking at a bunch of ebay auctions it seems the newer T100 versions have the rounded 8 and the older ones more boxy font.

Its not uncommon to have extra space in the hosel below the shaft. Your silver model might be plugged with a weight and generally the weight doesnt fill the void all the way.

What's weird is the black iron lettering looks more like what's in the stock photo vs the silver iron. This sounds crazy, but I wonder if Titleist was sourcing from multiple foundries during the pandemic. *Puts tin foil hat on*

I had an SM8 60.10S grind that the hosel was just a bit too big to fit my bending bar on. None of my other vokeys have this issue. I use a non-adjustable bending bar, I've been meaning to replace it for over 5 years. Anyway, when I measured the hosel OD it was in fact bigger than the other vokeys I had.

The extra space down in the hosel is just a port that is either used to insert more weight during a build or to have the head be a little lighter for an over length build.

This. Most definitely not something that counterfeiters would be taking the extra step to include.

Hey guys, I haven’t posted here on the forums in a while but this post caught my attention.  I had been looking at a set of used 2021 t100 irons at a local shop.  I noticed that compared to another t100 2021 set on the rack, the hosel length was slightly different and that the 8 on the sole was different.

I then compared it to the new t100 and t150 and the sole number font was just like the newest model.  I also wondered if maybe the set was from Japan possibly because the lie was flat but I couldn’t see a single bend mark on any of the hosels.

The difference in hosel length was small, but set seemed to be the same as the newest t100 model.  They did have a serial, but it was on the 4 instead of the 6 (or maybe the other way around compared to the legit 2021 t100.  All that made me wonder as well whether they were shifting production between suppliers or if they had some intermediate runs where they used the “new” body with the older 2021 back plate.   Or some small possibility that they  could be counterfeit but they were pretty high quality counterfeits if so.  The hosel lettering was sharp and crisp, paintfill looked oem.  Just some info for you.

I've done some simple club work in the past (installing adapters, re-shafting single clubs for members, etc) but I've never really pulled an entire iron set before so it just caught me off guard that the 8 and PW weren't like the rest. I really appreciate everyone's feedback! Now I feel a lot better about throwing my shafts in these heads.

I was repairing mine a a little silver metal piece slipped out to hide that void. I tossed it back in and kept moving. It was odd though.

If you look through 2nd swing’s 2021. 8 iron inventory, they have a mix of both fonts so either half of what they have is fake or Titleist changed the font at some point during the cycle.

Have worked with several different sets of T100s heads over the past couple of years and have seen the same thing.  Random heads of the set would have this void deeper in the hosel.  And these were ordered directly from Titleist through my club so they were legit.  In a couple of builds this space was helpful to add just a little bit of weight.

There is a thin aluminum disk that covers that void that you see in the 8 and PW.  If you drilled a bit harder on the rest of the irons you would likely drill through the disk or dislodge it.

This is exactly what I found.

Could be something as simple as a supplier switch or a two tiered development process where once supplier can do small pre-production and early volume then a large volume final casting or forging process goes to a production supplier.  Any number of legitimate reasons you might see the differences in sole shape and the number font/style.

BTW, I learned the other day that the set i was looking at checked out with titleist as legitimate with the serial number fwtw.
