AMT White X100 vs. PX 6.5

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a set of T150’s with AMT White X100s and have lost about 10 yards of carry in every iron after switching from 2021 t100s’ with Project X 6.5. Main reason for the switch was the lighter long irons but the loss of yardage doesn’t seem worth it. Have been looking into KBS $ Taper S+. Any input would be appreciated. Iron fitting earlier in the year suggested Modus 120x. That’s the back up plan but, you know, tinkering.

Its shaft wgt or profile, and its easy to find out.

Set a mark about the middle of the shaft, now add lead tape in both directions  (head to grip on the underside so you don't see it from address position). Add weight enough to equalize the shaft wgt difference between PX 6.5 and X100 AMT
(PX 6.5 should be considered 123.5 grams since they are 0.5 longer than DG uncut)

AMT X100 #3 = 112 grams (add 11.5 grams to equalize)
AMT X100 #4 = 115 grams (add 8.5 grams to equalize)
AMT X100 #5 = 118 grams (add 5.5 grams to equalize)
AMT X100 #6 = 121 grams (add 2.5 grams to equalize)
AMT X100 #7 = 124 grams, (this club has the wgt closest to PX 6.5, how does it work?)

If you see improvements by adding wgt, but not "all the way", the issue is both shaft wgt and profile.

DG is a different profile, and the flex slope is way steeper. (flex progression make the long end much softer than the short en when we compare DG AMT vs PX)

I was a PX 6.5 and PX 6.0 user for fifteen + years; great shafts.  My new T100 irons came with AMT Tour White - had them pulled soon after; they felt odd which translated to unusual yardages per club.

I used to think it was different shaft weights that got to me, but that's not the case; it's just TT less than optimum weight tolerances that I don't get along with.  I currently have MMT 85S in 3 & 4i and Pro Modus Tour 130S in 5i-PW, and weight differences are not an issue.

TT should make AMT Tour White shafts using tour issue tolerances.

Glad I’m not the only one to feel like there’s just something off about them.

I actually did the testing with a 7 iron at home with the Garmin R10 without even thinking about the similar weights. It was about 10 yards on average a shorter carry distance. Same strike the majority of the time. Just wasn’t flying as far.

Why not just stick with the 6.5?

That’s the easy thing to do haha. If I can find a set of the blackout version it will be an option. Sometimes the long irons feel a little boardy which is the main reason for wanting to go another direction and looking towards the S+ in KBS $ Taper

Then its given, the DG AMT profile DONT match your swing, PX is better for you. If you do your own club making, try a 6.0 in the long end if you feel the need for lower shaft wgt there.

I NEVER got as far as making AMT PX shafts (only DG and Rifle FCM), but if you find PX 6.0 to work as long irons, i can do the numbers for a fluid progression into the short end and the point you want.

Yes i made DG AMT sets before TT did, based on the standard DG X100, but i made them as flighted for 3/8" set ups, and the same can be done with PX, but i never tried it with PX, but know it can be done the same way i did with DG.
(they had a wgt progression of average 1 gram instead of 3 grams like AMT has)

There is more than a few players who have a mixed shaft sets, like PX 6.5 short and mid, and 6.0 long end, so dont be afraid to try a PX 6.0 as long iron shaft if you feel the need to lower shaft wgt in that end.

Here is one of 2 DG X100 AMT set ups ive made based on standard X100 shafts, and similar can be done with PX

Thank you for all the in depth knowledge on it. I will look into buying one for either 4 or 5 iron and giving it a shot.

The thing you really need to answer here is where the 10y loss is coming from, because without that info you run the risk of repeating this pattern with any future equipment change. You need to look for:

1) Swing speed. If a shaft weight or profile doesn’t agree with you then it could be impacting your timing/feel and slowing you down creating distance loss via less ball speed from less clubhead speed.

2) Launch and spin. Similar to #1 but with the added possibility of more forward shaft deflection as well adding dynamic loft and thus increasing launch and spin. If this pushes you out of a more ideal window you were in with the much stiffer PX 6.5 then it could also explain the distance loss.

3) Strike quality/smash factor. You said strikes were basically the same but you’ll want to confirm that with impact tape or foot spray on the face so you know for sure.

4) Club specs. What is the length and swingweight of this new set compared to the old one? Any significant difference here could easily play a part as well.

To use an analogy, what’s happened here is you got food poisoning after trying several things at a new restaurant last night and you need to narrow it down so you know what to avoid. Sure you could just never go to that restaurant again, but it would be far more useful to know that it was specifically the clams casino. 😆
