Sub 70 Pro V2 Fairways

Recommended Posts

New fairway up for pre-order. Not a bad looking club for $189 stock.

Has “dual face technology” which according to sub 70 works as follows:

  • Dual Face Technology: Providing the highest ball speeds possible with current technology, the face of the Sub 70 Pro V2 Fairway Wood is comprised of two separate faces, with the space between filled with TPE resin. The front face is made of U.S. Custom 455 Steel, with a gradient of 1.8mm thick at the edges and 2.1mm in the center, while the second face is a constant 1.8mm thick and is supported by two vertical columns to promote stability. On contact with a golf ball, the front face is pushed backward, compressing the TPE material and rear face, creating a high-pressure state which causes a rebound effect that results in increased ball speeds.

The dual face thing is interesting, would like to see how they perform in terms of ball speed against other OEMs.  Glad to see a DTC company actually trying to innovate a bit vs rolling out open models with different branding.

I kind of agree with this. The finishing looks like it could either be great or look somewhat cheaper (probably will need to see in person to judge), but it’s interesting to read their tech story

Obviously the bonded hosel is going to be polarizing but I know many on this site have professed preferences for bonded hosel fairways before. Hopefully they add this club to the demo program so folks can get their lofts dialed.

See they changed the custom shafts as well for the Sub70s.

I am really interested to try some of the fairways and hybrids because I'm a huge fan of the driving irons.  If Ping wasn't coming out with the i530s I'd probably try to even fit myself into a set of their irons.  The only thing where I think the price becomes slightly worth it is drivers for the big brands.  Everything else there is just minimal "science" that I think really makes a notable difference.

I'm really curious to try it, I pre-ordered one earlier this week. I want to see what the "dual face" does to ball speed. If nothing else, the all black paint scheme looks cool. I already have a Pro and a Pro Tour Only 3 & 5 wood, they put up some really solid numbers compared to the "big" brands, and the prices are just so good on them. I bought them on black friday for a little over $100 each.

I actually like the bonded hosels in fairway woods. It prevents me from tinkering with shafts every time I make a bad swing with it.

I'm really looking forward to testing in out when it arrives, hopefully in February some time.

KZG created this technology years ago in a driver they called the Gemini.  The Gemini did not have the TPE foam between the faces, just a sealed cushion of air.  Over the years, OEM's have made claims of big distance gains. (Remember the "17 more yards" claim?).   The Gemini really did give me 20-25 more yards.  Eventually the USGA deemed it Non-Conforming and KZG dropped it.

If the Sub 70 Pro V2 creates distance gains of half what the Gemini did, it will be a big hit IMO.  We will quickly see TM and other OEM's create their own version, and 2 faced heads could be the next "Big Thing"

Update:

I got mine and tested it inside against a bunch of brands and models (Tsr3, Stealth 2+, G430 max, Paradym). After all the testing it was AS fast, if not faster than pretty much all of them. When you catch it on the screws it sends some BOMBS.

What really surprised me the most was the smash factor was higher than most of the competitors too, usually around 1.49 or 1.50.

Overall the ballspeed is on par or higher than other brands, and it is really low spin. For the price, it is a phenomenal club, I cant wait to get it in grass and see how it goes.

I went with the HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX 70 6.5. My usual miss is a block right, but I am really inconsistent with a 3 wood off the turf. This model sets up really nice behind the ball and doesn't seem overly difficult to hit off the turf. I think it could be a real weapon off the tee  with the slightly deeper face as well. The weather is turning warm in MN and I'm hoping to get out this weekend and try it off of grass, it's been really promising inside so far.

Appreciate the feedback.  My only concern is face angle since it’s glued.

I would say it sets up square. I also have a Pro Tour only, and you can definitely notice the 2* open face on that one compared to the Pro V2.

So do you still have the Pro Tour fairway wood and is it the 14 degree model, what are your thoughts on it with regards to launch, spin and forgiveness, if you still have it I would love to see a pic at address as I have been considering taking a chance on one and the bonded hosel doesn't concern me as I played the Mizuno MP 650 for many years.

No I got rid of the Pro Tour fairway already, I'm terrible about flipping fairway woods. A couple of bad swings and I'm on to the next one...

Finally got to play my V2 15 degree.  Have a Project X HZRDUS 6.0 Black in it at stock length.  Club came in at D5 or so swingweight with stock 2g front and 9g rear weights.  I changed out the rear to 6 gram to fit the swingweight in between my hybrid and driver.  Nice of Sub70 to include all the various weights at no charge.

Unfortunately I didn't get too many swings with the club.  The course I was at doesn't have a range.  But...the club is hot.  Head launches a little higher than most 3-woods I have played, but not much.  Very easy to hit off the deck.  Not sure how off-center hits are because somehow I was hitting the ball well yesterday.  Sound is a bit muted, which I like.  Looks pretty square at address, good looking club all around.
