Shaft vs. club head

I don't know if this guy was trying to sell the last driver in the store or if he was being honest, but does various shafts influence your ball or does the club head? The salesman in the shop said that basically all clubheads have the same technology, the shaft is what separates everything.

 

I know flexes, and I'm not referring to that. I'm talking about Aldila vs. Fujikura vs. Grafalloy.

 

Anyway, as said in earlier post, I'm about a 17+ handicap, so I should have no business hitting a Titleist driver, but did (905 T) and have to say I was hitting with distance, accuracy, and consistency. The club had an Aldila graphite shaft with a stiff flex. That said, the next driver I hit was the FT-3 with an NVS Stiff Shaft. I hit this one with same distance, accuracy, and consistency. I then hit the Ping G5 and I hit the ball 15 yards further than the other two, this had the NV stiff shaft in it.

 

Comments please, on different shafts and if the clubhead or the shaft make the difference!!!

 

For some of you high handicappers, give the G5 a look. You will be amazed.

I think a good shaft is as important as a good head. Somewere I read something like: the head is the engine and the shaft is the transmission. You can't change one of them without adjusting the other one.

IMO a good shaft is very important.

This is like compairing your irons importance to your wedges to your driver. There all equal and all can make you hit the ball really badly. I know from experience. :dntknw:

in the example you give i would bet dollars to donuts that the added distance is 98% the effective loft of the head and maybe 2% is the extra length of the shaft (ping G5's are .75" longer than the other two you tested). why? the ping probably has a true loft about 2 degrees higher than what's printed on the sole, and this is by design from ping.they started this whole 'effective trajectory' thing back with the tisi tec and have just not exposed it in subsequent lines. the loft optimized your launch conditions by giving you more loft and height, so you hit it further. it's highly unlikely that a shaft change would give you 15 more yards, especially if you saw no difference between the nv and nvs in the titleist and the callaway heads.

I think the shaft is more important than the head and loft.

 

But it depends on the combination of the two as well. I like the Graffaloy Blue in a Titleist driver because of the heavier feeling head but this shaft doesn't feel as good in a less heavy head. Another thing it depends on is the skills of the player. If you are a better player you know what trajectory you hit and feel more differences in the shafts.
