Wedge Stripping

Where's the most cost effective place to send in a set of wedges to strip the plating?

I have 3 tour chrome sm9s I just want stripped to raw.

Callaway Epic Flash 3Wood

Maltby KE4 Max 4 & 5 Iron Dynamic Gold 105 S

Rogue ST Pro 6-PW PX Rifle Tour Flight 105 S

Vokey SM9 Wedges (48),52,56,60

For the cost of removing the plating… 100% more cost effective to sell your Tour Chromes and purchase Raw Vokeys.

Pretty sure removing the chrome finish will have a negative effect on the playability of the grooves too, but I could be wrong.

New raw Sm9s are $220 a piece. I'm guessing to get these stripped will probably cost $30-$50 each. I was just coming here to see if anyone had recommendations for any custom shops they know of.

As far as grooves go, they sell them in raw, so I don't see how microscopic layers of plate would change anything. They would have to make the raw wedges, and the plated wedges at different specs for that to make sense. Also, I could be wrong, but I don't think it would be an issue.

This is a common topic.  You might want to try the search for info.  As for cost, $50 to strip a wedge is egregious.  It should be closer to half that.

Vokey does make the plated wedges and raw wedges different for grooves, they make the plated ones just past the legal limit so when they are plated they fall back into conforming grooves. It's very little but it's something they started doing a few years back.

That being said, Yes it may cost a bit more but I am sure you would be happier with new wedges over ones that get stripped, as you will lose a little bit of weight as well and if you do any polishing or blasting to get the heads cleaned up after the stripping they will lose a bit more again.

I agree with the above to sell yours and order new ones as you will then have fresh grooves again as well.

Another option would be to get the black finish and soak them yourself. Ive done it a few times and its easy with some Pepsi, clr, white vinegar…ect. You would never know my current SM9s were black at one point. They look as rusted n raw as any $220 raw option will eventually.

Ive done that before as well when they didn't make the PW/GW heads in raw, to me they alwasy felt harder, the heat treatment they use to bake the black finish in there changes the wedge IMO, as a builder for a big club fitter you can also tell its a harder material as we sometimes struggle to bore the jet black ones out to take .370" graphite shafts.

Fair enough. As a club builder you have much more hands on knowledge than I. I have got the raws once and haven’t noticed that much of a difference but thats just me.  Good luck with whichever route you go.

Buy the black and do a coke soak or something similar.

Other option find a local automotive or metalworking shop that does chrome work, they might be able to help out for a few bucks.

Everyone I've contacted so far is $40+ per head. I'll just hold off on my plans lol. Plus people here seem to think it will change the specs of the wedge so 🤷‍♂️

I just got 3 tour chrome wedges back from Oughtons.

- The work seems to be top notch, wedges came back really nice and should start rusting soon.

- Communication was lacking a bit, He never even sent me my tracking info and thankfully I asked for it. When I paid the invoice from paypal it somehow gave him our old address even though it has been deleted from my PP account. (Not oughtons fault they shipped where paypal told them to) but the wedges had been  delivered to the wrong address for 4 days before I caught wind of it.

- Time frame was quoted 3-5 weeks and it took every bit of 5

- Price was very fair IMO

- Weighting was one thing I wished I did, I did not weigh them before or after but to get back to my desired SW I did have to add quite a bit more tip weight
