Right knee/hip going toward ball at top of backswing

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to get rid of early extension for a few years and it's gotten a lot better, but I still have it. I know i'm a bit steep on the downswing, but I want to solve one thing at a time. The thing I've been noticing on my backswing is that near or at the top of the backswing, I seem to start going toward the ball. I can't stop it.  Any suggestions to finish the turn while keeping my right hip and right knee continuing to get away from the ball?  In my mind, I want to solve this before I move onto a shallowing move, but I could be confused. I really can't stop this move. I've gone to the extreme of trying to lift my right toes up so maybe the weight is on my right heel. I can't stop this and I think it's a problem, but I could be off on my assessment of my swing.

I've tried everything. I've tried the drill against a wall, a workout ball, a chair. But when I make a real swing, I can't not go toward the ball at the top of the backswing.

IMO in your first move down the club moves towards the ball which makes the club very steep and your right hip/knee move toward the ball in an effort to shallow.  I would start with getting the club to move away from the ball a bit in transition which would give your hip/knee a reason to stay back.

You mean deeper with the hands at the top, or more like dropping the hands from the top?  I'm not exactly sure what you mean but really appreciate the feedback.

The clubhead moves toward the ball and then straight down so the club gets steep.  The clubhead should work back and away from the ball to start.  Go to the top and stop and then flex and ulnar deviate the lead wrist while watching the clubhead.

Not a coach so take it for what it’s worth; but it seems like a tamed classic move; early right hip move in takeaway so it maxes out early, which triggers the arms lift and left hip has to dive into the ball (rather than pivoting ‘around’ the center of your pelvis)… thus, you can’t effectively push the left hip back in transition (can’t press into the ground correctly to do so), with rotation, right hip dives in, crowding the space, EE / stall / flip needed to save it

Start with butt sticking out too much at address.

Yeah, it's that your hips are back too far and so your weight is back too far.

So, you "re-balance" dynamically to get the weight where it should be (front of the foot arches):

Same body angles but farther from the ball

I might pull the feet back another inch, too. But… I agree, that's better.

I meant keep the same body angles and get farther away.  I think you knew that but my wording wasn’t very clear.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.
