Extending shaft with cut in it

Recommended Posts

I want to extend some graphite iron shafts a half inch or so, but when I removed the grips one of the shafts had a cut in it. Appears someone started to cut to length and realized they were cutting it too short and moved up about 3/4 of an inch and re-cut it to the desired length.  The cut is a bit less than halfway around the shaft. Would it be a mistake to glue the extension in and re-grip it? Maybe fill the cut with epoxy as well once the shaft is in? I didn't get too crazy, but put some pressure on it and it doesn't seem like the butt end above the cut would break off... especially with the extension down the shaft with lots of epoxy. But I'm not very knowledgeable about shafts and repairs. Thanks for any advice.

If the cut is only 3/4" from the butt, the extension will actually make it stronger and less likely to break compared to how it is now.

Just use a good quality extension that is the right size for the ID of the shaft.

Thanks guys. I had already bought these products. For just a half inch extension will they be ok or should I return them?

That epoxy is fine for reshafting, but not the best for your job.   See my previous post for the best one.

Random extensions off Amazon are of unknown quality, a few bad reviews.

Return them both.
Go to Golfworks , get the right epoxy and extension.

Here’s the extensions.

You’ll need to measure the ID of the shaft with a micrometer and order that size, I’d get the next one just smaller and the next one just bigger to ensure .

I’ll post later on how to prep.

Not familiar with those extensions - but if you measured the ID of your shafts, and they have a size to match that pretty closely, and it's only 1/2" you need to extend, then it might work fine.  The shorter the extension length the more likely you're able to get away with weaker extensions.   But if there are quality issues with getting the right size then that could be an issue.

And while I respect @st1800e experience and opinion, I don't necessarily agree 100% that a different epoxy is needed.   IF the fit of the extension is good - no gaps or any wiggle room or looseness - then any epoxy is fine.  It's only for looser fitting extensions that the alternative epoxy will give any benefit.  So from my perspective it's more a band-aid for a bad decision that's made when selecting the extension.   Avoid that bad decision and you don't have to worry about it as much.
