Grinder for tapering .370 shafts

Adam C

Recommended Posts

What I really want is a grinder/sharpener like the shaft manufactures have to taper the tips of .370 iron shaft. The slowest part of my process is tapering down .370 tip graphite shafts using a belt sander, not to mention all the dust it kicks up which isn't good for numerous reasons.

Anyone on here know where I could get one or have one made for me??

Last time I saw one (commercially available) was 20 yrs ago.  Several thousand dollars as it was for large scale use.  I'm sure that shaft OEM's have ones similar, but are custom made for them.  I have looked periodically and found nothing.  If you have money to burn, maybe GolfMechanix can build one for you?

Unless you are doing 100's plus a day, just do like the rest of us and do it by hand.  Or get really good at using a belt sander.  I'm really good with a belt sander and every one that I do is a process.  Fit - sand - fit - sand - fit - sand...

Take a small block of wood, and drill a 3/8" hole roughly 1" deep, as close to the edge of the board as you can.
Using your belt sander, sand the block at the taper angle to expose the bottom of the hole by the taper amount (~.007"), with the top of the hole right at the edge of the block. Then clamp the block to your sander, insert shaft and spin. Once you get it set up, shouldn't take more than 5-10  seconds per shaft. Figure out how to clamp a shop vac close to the belt to catch the dust.

Why not drill the clubhead?

Lots of reasons not to.  The easiest is to alter the shaft especially if you want to go back to .355" or want to sell the heads.

I worry that grinding a graphite shaft would weaken it.

It’s such a small amount that it doesn’t affect structural integrity.

Builders do this all the time.  Very common practice.

Disc sander with the angle fence set to the appropriate angle?  Might have to use a spacer block to get closer to the disc on a unit like shown, but it should hold the angle, and allow you to feed the shaft in until the proper shaving is done.

Baseless worry.  The majority of the shaft in the hosel is still .370.

Any time I am concerned about dust, I put on my P100 half mask respirator. There are dust masks that serve the same purpose. Metal dust settles quickly, too, so it isn't going to stay trapped in the air; however the harmful particulates and gases will be blocked from inhalation. 🙂

The N95s are fine, I just like the P100s because they are slightly better and they are oil resistant.

You're only removing .007" at the tip, and nothing at all 1" from the tip.
