BB&F Ferrules on Axiom Shafts

Recommended Posts

Any recommendations on getting BB&F ferrules to work on .370 Axiom shafts? I'm tapering the tips to fit into .355 Titleist iron heads, but don't know the best route for fitting the ferrules. Ream the ferrules? Taper more of the tip section to include the part where the ferrule will sit? I did try reaming one ferrule with my wire drill bit and destroyed it pretty quickly, but I might have just been too aggressive.

BB&F recommends reaming the ferrule. I've done a single Axiom build using a BB&F ferrule without reaming by gently heating both the ferrule and the shaft tip enough that the ferrule can be pushed down into place with the head. You'll want to be careful of course to not apply too much heat, but the ferrule will deform before the shaft gets too hot.

Same idea could be done for a steel parallel shaft but I would only heat the shaft and not the ferrule. That way only the inside of the ferrule gets warm enough to expand and into place.

I’ve never had to ream anything.  If I get one that’s tight I just hit it with the torch for a second and it pushes right on like normal.

I just use a drill bit, a sharp one and then shave a bit of the inside away....then I will fit the ferrule onto the shaft and warm it up over hot running water for about 30 secs and then tap it down.....when sanding the axiom shaft, it only takes very little sanding to fit the taper tip hosel....only the tip ( 1/4" ) needs to be sanded too...

+1, 3/8 drill bit and a little windex type spray for lubrication and go slow.

No need to sand the ferrules. Just drop them in boiling water for a few seconds and they will soften a little and slide on no problem.

Perfect, thanks. I've heard that method works with stubborn ferrules. I just wasn't sure if it would work on a .370 tip. But I'll give it a try.

Using heat sounds right. Along with boiling as was said too.

Same here. I've put BB&F's on .370 Fujikura Pro Iron shafts. Very tight fit, but I just remove the paint under most of the ferrule, and use a drop of epoxy for lubricant, and tap them on with the head.

Fwiw, all shafts are .370 where the ferrule sits. The .355 taper is only on the last inch of the shaft.

OK, so, I did a combined approach. I sanded out the inside of the ferrule, but only lightly. Then I heated up the ferrule in boiling water. Worked like a charm. All epoxied and drying now.

All of these are great ideas and they work. I just wish they would make them all in 370. It's much easier and less of a pain in the behind to make up any slack, if there even is any slack depending on the shaft, on a 355 shaft.
