Is this shaft tip toast?

Recommended Posts

Is this shaft tip toast or still playable? This was after I had an adaptor pulled.

Tip it .5” and you should be ok. Hard to tell with the old epoxy on there but it looks clean the rest of the way

If it has been over heated (which it looks like it has been), you cannot trust the rest of the tip.  No way of knowing how far the delamination goes.

Not bad, not great. Why does it look like it's 3 inches of old epoxy?

It was electrical tape residue to protect the shaft. Came off with some rubbing alcohol

This sounds to me like you paid somebody to do it for you. If that's the case they should buy you a new shaft IMO.

I'd probably tip it 0.5" or so and hope it's fine but it would definitely always sketch me out

Looks to me like the first 1/2" - 3/4" of the tip is pretty much trashed.  (delamination)

I would chalk it up as a loss because there is no way to be certain with the integrity of the resins and fibers further up the shaft.

But then again, I tend to get panicky with graphite shafts.

Cut through it professionally, at 90D angle of course, at a point leaving you the recommended untipped distance, examine the section across the cut for delamination. If a DIY job then use a fine-toothed saw, like a mini hacksaw, but tightly-tape down around the cut line to avoid break out as the saw exits the shaft.

Graphite can to some degree absorb and swell with epoxy. When the heat releases it, you might see stuff like this. It's easy to over-heat the stuff, too when you're not dealing with steel.

Put some peanut butter on it and call it breakfast.... It's toast in my opinion.

Disclaimer: Even if it is not, there's no way I'd reuse that.

I found an original Ventus Blue stiff shaft with a grand canyon sized split in it from the very tip to about halfway up the remaining .335 parallel section. It was only $15 in the used shaft bin...what the heck. I offered the shop owner to pay his price if he would tip it to the max and sand(prep) it so I could see what I was buying. It looked good enough from my house! Best shaft I've got in my paddock so far.

Anyway, what's it going to hurt to at least tip and prep this shaft to help ya decide what to do with it? Put it in a 3W?

Cheers
