Equipment Once Thought Too Gimmicky Now Common Place

Starting with the "The Controller." Sure the infomercial has a lot of fluff and over stated claims of performance. But the driving iron is a staple in many bags today.

  • JD3 changed the title to Equipment That Seemed Gimmicky and Failed But Is Common Today

TopFlite Thunder Heat woods. Carbon face inserts…they were actually a good club but didn’t sell well.

KZG Gemini driver. I believe the idea of the 2nd face welded right behind the main club face was to stabilize the crown & sole from deflecting, similar to the JailBreak concept used by Callaway. There might be an added “pressure wave” effect between the 2 faces in the air gap.

My example is backwards, it's something that I thought was a good idea and turned out to be a gimmick.

The Medicus was advertised constantly when I started golfing, at the time it seemed like it would be a good work around vs taking lessons, it wasn't.  Never hear about it any more.  Never hear from Jack Hamm and his special driver either.

What's interesting is that in the early 2000's Callaway had a patent for a dual faced driver. Never came to retail with anything like that. The JailBreak concept Callaway used was first used by Zevo in the early late 90's/2000's with a single post connecting the sole and crown. Callaway ultimately purchased Zevo driver patents that were used in the Jailbreak tech.

Didn't Nicklaus Golf at one point also have a dual faced driver? For driver rigidity I'm surprsied Ping or another company didn't take the nearly flat crown and sole concept Ping used for the TisiTec driver in other drivers. The TisiTec drivers were cannons.

Top Flight Professional golf ball, a solid core (I believe 2 piece) ball. Greg Norman experimented with them in the early 90's an era of  almost entirely wound balls on tour. This design wouldn't return until years later when tiger used a Nike solid core ball to blow away the field at the 2000 US Open. Shortly after Titleist came out with the ProV1 and within just a few years later I don't think anyone used wound balls on tour anymore

I remember those things. I had been golfing a while and I was like "WTF is that?" LOL

It seemed like there was something to it the way they talked about it... Now, the website still exists but it advertises like a 90s infomercial.... They even offer a "Swing like the Pros Drill DVD!!!!"

I still have the DVD and the left handed 5 iron I bought for my wife.  Every once in a while I'll pick it up and wonder how in the world she does things left handed, lol.

Wound balls sucked so bad.  Top Flight had the Strata in the late 90s and it was so much better than anything at the time.

Just before the ProV1 came out I used to really like the Titleist Professional 90. As a matter of fact, Tiger used it when he blew away the field and pretty much the course at the 97' Masters.

Rails on the soles of fairway woods.

Stan Thompson started the ball rolling with the Ginty, which were the preserve of elderly ladies and hackers when I started playing in the mid 80s; Cobra knocked out a few woods with railed soles too, which were rare beasts and still a bit of a niche product, then Taylor Made brought it to the masses and achieved universal acceptance with the Raylors.

Adjustable heads.

They used to be weird-looking, iron-like things that looked like chisel on the end of an Asp baton that jet-setting executives who presumably weren't great golfers used to put in their hand luggage so they could have a quick knock at Pebble Beach or Pinehurst in between signing million dollar contracts - or whatever the sales blurb dreamed up. The adverts were always buried in the back few pages of Golf Monthly alongside the self-correcting golf balls and non-legal wedges that had faces like a meat tenderiser.

Now it's hard to find a wood that doesn't have a twizzley hosel on it.

I was just going to post adjustable hosels but you beat me too it.

Spikeless shoes. Remember the uproar when Couples started wearing the Ecco shoes. Now everyone offers spikeless as their default.

I personally hate this mainly cause I prefer spikes and also once the nubs wear out the shoes are done.
