Inherited 10,000 plus old golf clubs

Thanks--- At this stage of life I needed to declutter some. But trust me NONE of my MacGregors went. In fact I am getting back healthy enough with my back to start swinging my infamous Mac Hogans again in daily play. A silver lining though I was able to sell my giant diesel tool box and tools for which I had not unlocked in over 10 years for cash. I am also free of the now $110 a month rent. That adds to my monthly golf budget. Most of the stuff over there I had not done  anything with for years.

I thought of you last month when I had a AP Original putter reshafted. I remembered your MacHogans story and need to come up with a good nickname for this putter, now equipped with a Walter Hagen fluted shaft. Wal-mer, maybe?

Arnie Wal or Arnie Hagen---- The Mac Hogan nickname did not originate with me. I remember the conversion being called that in the 60s and 70s in the Piedmont of NC. In that time frame you also had Mac Spaldings and Mac Wilson. Back then Hogan Apex were the best shafts. In fact so popular that Mr Hogan issued a letter to his dealers about selling shafts to go into non Hogan clubs. He threatened to pull their dealership if they were caught. My old man for some reason he never disclosed did not like Mr Hogan period so he did not sell Hogan equipment. His bud in Eastern NC was a dealer and the old man got the shafts from him. When the letter came out he sent my old man a copy which he found amusing. It did not stop crap with the hustlers they simply bought a set of Hogan irons. They had a guy in Charlotte NC named Harold Dale do the conversion. There was no telling how many sets of un hit Hogan blade heads were in that shop when he passed.

I had always been of the impression the "Hogan Conversions" were a Carolina thing. According to some of our fellow WRX members I was told it was a Midwestern thing too.

It was funny my old man I guess because of his dislike of Hogan always said he never understood why anyone would mess up a perfectly good set of Mac or Wilson irons with inferior shafts

based on your previous recommendations, I have kept a set of AEPros here, in case I get a set of something else to put those Apex shafts into.

sadly I really don't like the way the clubs feel, but the shafts are worthy of saving. my Rams, never giving those up. have DG shafts and just lovely.

one never knows.....

being a WRX member has provided so much enlightenment regarding equipment. many tidbits I've picked up are/were from you, so a big Thanks @BIG STU

As has already been mentioned, this discussion brings back memories of the Niles Hoard.  I think that IO had to rent a wharehouse to sort and distribute the clubs from.

Yes he did and he posted pics and to me it was overwhelming. I guess someone with better computer skills or not as lazy as me can go back to the archives and see if the posts and pics survived. I think he lives up North somewhere and I guess it could be a nice winter project to sort out the clubs if one can afford to heat that big warehouse he rented

This is certainly a big project and likely not a cost effective one. Sorting them and cataloguing them would take forever and I doubt that there would be much return. Even sifting through that many clubs would be a massive chore, let alone cataloguing them.

I personally don’t have a long enough attention span to attempt a project of this size. If I was the OP, I would contact the Golf Heritage Society and see if they could assist.

I assume the wharehouse pics are taken after a substantial amount of the clubs had been sold/disposed of, but it gives you the idea.  The first pic was the actual stash!

I’m speechless other than I now know what my weekend search is gonna entail. I’m guessing there’s a thread or two somewhere on this forum about this.

Did any holy grail’s come out of this?

Terrifying and yet kinda cool

Before my time around here, but the "Niles Hoard" lit up the classic section as it unfolded.  The accompanying photos were lost during the software gymnastics a few years back.  Losing much of the dramatic effect.  Major kudos to @scomac2002 for finding a few.  There were some choice clubs, but a lot of junk also.  Here's the story as it unfolded:

I did run across a comment by Iromaster Oddities during my search talking about brand new Wilson Staff irons and persimmon woods still in plastic from circa 1960!

A lot was shipped to First Tee as a donation and others still scrapped that weren’t worth dealing with.  IO said he wouldn’t buy another hoard like that so there couldn’t have been enough profit in it to justify the effort.

those pics remind me of a long gone store north of Chicago. World of Golf. they had a back warehouse filled floor to ceiling with clubs.  amazingly, the staff could take you straight to your selection.

ETA- found this article - dated 2005.

darnit - I'm getting old....

Pro Shop World of Golf always was about more than selling golf clubs.

The store, located at 8130 Lincoln Ave. in Skokie, was golf’s equivalent of the corner drugstore.

It was a place for golfers to hang out, test new equipment, or simply tell lies about their games. The regulars included the late Chicago Tribune columnist Mike Royko.

The staff not only knew many of the customers by name, they knew what they had in their bags.

“Guys would want to buy some newfangled thing, and I’d tell them, `You’ve already got that club,'” said manager Kim McCombs. “We knew all the guys.”

Pro Shop used that personal approach at its two Skokie locations for 46 years. But like the corner drugstore, it is becoming a thing of the past.

Pro Shop shut its doors for the last time in November. Its demise is a metaphor for the golf business. Independent outlets are disappearing as superstores such as Golfsmith and Golf Galaxy have emerged in the last 10 years.

Owner Emil Lauter alleges the major golf manufacturers undercut his store by giving preferential pricing to the big-box retailers. He said Pro Shop couldn’t compete with the deals offered to the larger chains.

At its peak, Lauter said Pro Shop did $8 million to $9 million per year in business during the mid ’90s; he also owned a smaller store in Elmwood Park. Then business started to erode as the superstores started to become more prevalent.

The last I can remember him posting on here was maybe 2015!  It was before all the hijynx with the software.  Who knows?  Maybe Big Stu knows.  A lot of the guys who posted back then are no longer active on WRX.

Ironmaster Oddities (aka Uncle Bob) has posted in the Persimmon Golf Society FB Group in the recent past.  Although it's been awhile since I've noted one from him.  From there , I'm aware of his name, residency (not far from Niles, Michigan where the hoard was located) and his profession.  But respecting his privacy, not going to mention it here.  Maybe he's done with the online chatter business.  Seems to be a tight network of persimmon golf enthusiasts that I assume interact outside of social media platforms.

August 11, 2020 is the date of the WRX shutdown when they changed the site hosting software.  A last visit date often seen by those that no longer participate here.
