Soft Stepping AMT White X100's -Split soft step?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried soft stepping PW-7 two times and the 5 & 6 irons once? Is that crazy or am I on to something? If I'm correct, weight would be the same in the 7 & 6 and flex closer to the same? Aren't the longer irons a bit softer in the AMT white X100's so this would even out while keeping the weight from getting maybe too low and soft there with a double soft step? Thanks for thoughts / similar builds.

I'm playing them ssx2 through the entire set. (because I got a new 2-8 set dirt cheap)

While the long irons are a little lighter, I don't find the weight to be an issue, because it's still the same 3g progression.

As a 60year old long time S300 user, I really like them.

Haven't seen actual direct measurements but according to TT, the profile does not get softer in the longer irons.  Same profile, just lighter.   At least not any softer than any other shaft stiffness progression.  ALL irons progressively get softer in longer irons to compensate for the lighter head weight.   That's why stepping works.

But sensitivity to stiffness changes though the different clubs in the set is very personal.  If the shorter clubs actually feel to firm to you, then nothing crazy about trying to tweak them with an extra soft step.  Just realize it's really a pretty subtle change - don't expect to much unless you are very sensitive to stiffness changes.

Also realize the difference between stiffness and weight feel can get a bit fuzzy.   It may be that the AMT white's might just be a bit too heavy in the shorter irons (instead of too stiff).    If that's the case, another possibility might be to use the DG 120's in the P-7.

No.    AMT weight progressions are 3 gm per club.   A difference of one soft step in the mid irons is only ~1.5 gm.   The two  will be closer but there still will be a difference.

I miss the X100's feel and consistency but they were a lot to handle in the mid/longer irons the last few years I used them. Haven't found the right shafts since. 7 Iron swing speed probably closer to 85 on course than higher 80's to 90 on the monitor at the range. Certainly late in the round. Tried X100 120 after the X100 but they had a very different feel and Nippon Modus 125S never loaded well for me. Using PX LZ 6.0 right now but prefer the dynamic gold over the project x. Vokey PW w/S400 vs I210 PW with PX LZ 6.0 I get a much different shot shape. Hard to control the hotter I210 I know but the shaft isn't helping. That's what's driving me towards the soft stepped AMT. (Maybe in Titleist T100/150 or Blueprint S)

From what I'm hearing here, just a 2x soft step through the set could work. Thanks for feedback!

Not really enough info to make it clear the problem is stiffness vs weight.

But there is one quick test you can make to maybe give you an idea.   You can 'test' soft stepping by adding weight to the head and then testing choked up.

Add 7 gm of lead tape to the head and test choked up 1/2" - that will let you feel how the shaft will play soft stepped x1 (or x1 more than it is now).    Add 14 gm and test choking up 1" to test soft stepped  x2.

Yes, it is a lot of lead tape but it is just a test.  Just wrap it around the hosel.  It will look horrible but it will give you an idea of whether it might be worth going that route.

Don't know if I'll have the opportunity to test them with the tape but I do like the idea of that work around. I am thinking it's a little bit of both regarding weight and stiffness. I have always preferred heavy shafts but that may be changing as I'm hitting the back half of my 50's. I have hit a friend's AMT S300's enough to know there's more flex there than I want. Presuming and hoping a slightly lighter / slightly softer SS AMT X100 will give me that good x100 feel with tighter dispersion for a couple / few years, or until I get another idea!
