Lost my 8-iron (and whoever picked it up lied about finding it). It just turned up at a resale store!

Recommended Posts

OK, so I posted this awhile back. I lost my 8-iron at my course. I played my shot and was walking toward the hole after hitting on 13. Probably looking ahead, I thought I had slotted the club back into my bag, but must have missed, as it wasn't there when I pulled it out on 18. Once I finished the round, I grabbed a cart, drove backwards on the course, asking everyone if they'd seen it. I got "no" across the board. I get out to 13, and it's not there. I know exactly where it should have been: left rough, 165 from the pin, or slightly closer walking in line toward the hole. It's nowhere to be found after searching for 10 minutes. Of course, the guys at the shop say "don't worry, everyone turns in clubs here". Except for a players cavity back 8-iron with an X-flex shaft, it turns out. Losing a club as part of a set is a big hassle: it's not like losing a sand wedge that isn't part of a set.

I was searching for a replacement today when it popped up for sale on a local used club specialist's site. I'm guessing one of the people I saw on the course had it the whole time and didn't want to say anything. That $35 must have been a big deal to them.

I'm going to visit the shop tomorrow. Any ideas on how I should approach the siutation?  I know it isn't their fault; I need it back and probably have to buy it.  I could probably get the guy who picked it up blackballed from my course, however.

wow that sucks

I don't know how you prove it's yours if there's no serial etc

I know logically it would be pretty far fetched not to believe you if you showed them your set

I guess worst case scenario, you get your club back, albeit paying for it would def sting

Yeah-I'll take my matching 9 and 7. The wear patten is the same.

Take your set in “complete” so they can see that it’s the “one” to complete your set. I’m sure grips etc would all be the same.

The Richard Cranium who found your club and essentially "resold" it to the shop is a jerk.  You will probably have to buy it back.  However, I would explain to the shop that it is yours and have some type of proof  (others from your set, serial number, etc).  This is slightly better than the other party keeping the club, but not much.

Perhaps take your 7i and 9i with you, explain the situation and try to reason the price down ...

Don’t make this any harder.  You forgot your club.  It happens.  Don’t point fingers at anyone.  Just pay the money to get your club back.  The fact that it turned up at a shop is 1 million % good mojo for you.  Don’t ruin it.

Agreed with a combination of these two. The shop owner/whoever is working there isn't a part of this equation so anything that may be perceived as hostile/combative towards them could easily backfire. I tried a version of this around 10 years ago when my whole bag got stolen from my car. I was canvassing shops in the area including things like Play It Again Sports (popular second hand sports franchise in the states) and I got a *really* negative reaction from one of the store owners when I politely explained what had happened and what I was doing. He gave me a version of "look man i've got a wife AND a girlfriend to pay for, i'm not liable for any of this stuff and I want no part of it" and all but asked me to leave.

I'd bring your whole iron set but leave it in the car, ask to speak to someone potentially in charge there and say "hey, totally not looking to create an issue here, but here is what happened and I have my matching set in the car to prove this iron is mine. If it's possible to take it with me that would be awesome, but I understand if your hands are tied and I need to buy it". Either the good mojo will prevail OR you're only out a few bucks for a lesson learned.

I would also jokingly ask for security footage of the a-hole that brought it in. 😅

Just pay the $35 and take it as a lesson learned. It's not the shop's fault and the chance of LE pursuing a small claim is absolutely zero. All the @sshat has to say is he/she/it "found it on the course" and nobody can prove otherwise.

It's simply not worth the hassle.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

The fact you found it is an absolute miracle.

Pay whatever the price the store asks and accept responsibility; you lost it.

35$ or 135$ is better than ordering a replacement or scouring the world to find a close match, then bending it, gripping it, etc.

Would it be nice if someone returned it to the pro shop? Absolutely. Should they have returned it? Absolutely. But they didn’t - pay up.

How is paying for your mistake not much better than the guy keeping your club? $35 versus not having an 8 iron?

im sure not having lunch at the club or 3 cocktails with dinner is going to break this guy…. File a police report. Hire a private detective .

Maybe I'm naive but any self respecting owner / manager of the resale shop should listen for 30 seconds take one look at your 7 and your 9 and happily hand it over.   Anyone with any ethics knows that there could be some "stolen"  /  questionably  found clubs coming through the door most every day.

You also have the nuclear option of taking some pictures and lighting them up like a Christmas tree on social media - perhaps threaten that if you don't get what you want.

Also the clown that stole your club - I would hunt him down and destroy him on social media  ... just sayin

Yep - but it went cold case.

Then I realized I can’t have a set without an 8 iron. So I bought a new set. I saved $35 by spending $1300. That will teach that guy to sell the club that I lost in the rough. Bush league psych out stuff!

Buy it. Move on.

Not the resellers fault.

Hit ball, place club back in its spot in bag.

Got a club missing. Walk back immediately. I have jogged back 2 holes for a mates club....

Yes, the OP made a mistake.

The person who found the club likely lied about finding it when questioned, given the OP's chain of events.  That's why turning it in isn't much better than the person just stealing the club outright.

You're so damn lucky to find your club after YOU LOST it.

Should the @sshat who found it have turned the club that YOU LOST back in to the clubhouse? That's an unequivocal yes.

Should the store be blamed/chastised or lose money for possessing the club that YOU LOST? Absolutely not.

It's not the stores fault that YOU LOST your club.

I agree with the masses. Buy the club that YOU LOST back and thank your lucky stars it ever made it back home.

A lot of people seem to think that the shop is selling it for the $35 that was the price that the OP said that the thief got for it.  I'm assuming he used the PGA used club value guide.  I'm sure the shop is selling it for at least $100.

I would most certainly file a police report, especially if there is matching serial numbers.  If the shop has records of who sold it then the thief could be caught (unlikely).  But I don't buy the "you left it now you have to buy it back" argument.  It is still his club, he is entitled to his property.  The shop bought stolen property, they are the ones on the hook.
