Who is the most disappointing winner of a tournament ever?

Going to say it again here: if Harman were tall and on GQ status like Scott everyone would have loved his win, quirks and all. Rory gets into fits of 10 looks before taking a shot at times, and Bradley lives by them, but they never get the hate Harman does. Don't believe his groups have been warned about their actual pace of play either.

It really is funny how we act when a winner doesn't look or behave like we feel a winner should.

I'm sorry but no...

really only the first one imo. He duffed it three times on 10, scrubbed a 5 while Hoch hit two perfect shots. It was over.

floyd on 11 wasn’t the same. Always been a tough shot. And Norman played poorly the day before, plus with his history I didn’t think it was a shock at all.

Ray Floyd had a 4 shot lead with 6 holes left and let it slip away to end up in the Playoff. The water ball in the Playoff is a choke for a 4-time major winner. Tough shot, yes. But Floyd was not a rookie like Åberg.

No to what? Has his group regularly been put on the clock because of it? Do the average or taller guys who have crazy quirks or repeated looks get the same hate? Aside from Na, who was so bad he went to multiple specialists to work through it, there's not nearly so much grumbling about things like this with others as there is for Harman.

Feel free to clarify what you're saying no to. Not going to crucify the guy for a few more waggles to get set when he's playing for a Major, for his first Major, and he's been heckled by the crowds for two days because he's not the one they want to see getting it done.

It's not just a couple times a round its every shot. Its ridiculous and bad golf TV. You might have missed my post earlier but I explained pretty succinctly why I chose him. I turned off the open because every time he hit I would have to wait almost 60 seconds for him to finally hit the ball. That was after discussing his shot with his caddy by the way. You can defend him all you want, this isn't a thread about his golfing ability. Its a thread about disappointing winners and he fits the bill perfectly. Also his height is immaterial. Rickie Fowler, JT, and Rory are all short (Much shorter than me) and I love watching all three because they don't spend 45 seconds to a minute setting up on EVERY SINGLE SHOT.

How do you feel about Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, J.B. Holmes & Jason Day?

Just a personal one since I followed him as an amateur, Dan Pohl losing the Masters to Craig Stadler in a playoff in 1982.   Not that I disliked Stadler, but I grew up in Michigan, saw Dan Pohl win 2 state Amateurs in person.  Winning the Masters might have taken his career to another level, didn't even realize he won the Vardon Trophy in 1987, then had back surgery, and his career was basically over....

Thanks for bringing up this one. Guess I need to go check out the 1982 Masters on YouTube.

As a Phil fan who also hated Justin Rose because of the 2012 Ryder Cup, the 2013 US Open was torture. Phil made so many mistakes on Sunday and still had a chance on 18. 2 doubles on the front nine, missed a ton of short putts and made bogey twice on the back with a wedge in his hand.

This one sucked more then the other US Opens because he was playing so good going into Sunday.

Any tournament won by Phil, never been able to stand him.

Spieth missing the playoff at the Open in 2015 really wanted him to win that one.

Wait! Spieth did win the 2015 Open because of DJ's 3 putt on 18.  I was there.  Oh, you mean the British.🤣

I agree with ZJ over Louis at the open, bubba over Louis at the masters and definitely Billy Ho last week was a real stinker. I don't hate any of those guys, I'm not a horschel fan because his attitude is so annoying but he may be my favourite of that trio.

Are you Brian Harman?  Slow play is rife throughout golf but Harman really stands out as particularly egregious.  You complain that he gets hate because he's short and not Adam Scott - well, AS isn't super-slow, and his swing is a joy to watch - aesthetics do count.  But nothing (and I mean nothing, not even all the holed putts with the putter as large as his head) is fun to watch in Brian's game. Oosthuizen is short in stature but is a pleasure to watch as he has an elegant swing and a happy demeanour. But Brian - like many others, he doesn't even seem to start thinking and talking to his caddy about the shot until his playing partner has hit (see also P. Cantlay). Then we have those waggles...

I agree that the crowd at Liverpool were idiotic (and I actually think it's very impressive that he used that to spur himself on) - that, along with the p1ssing rain, the bland course with the ludicrous tricked up 17th hole, and the dreadful, ponderous winner, all made it the worst Open I can remember, and I've been watching since the 80s and sat through Curtis and Hamilton.  This thread is about who people found disappointing winners. It's subjective, and a lot of people disliked Harman winning the Open as it was an utterly miserable watch.  You disagree, and that's cool.

I started reading your post, OP and I was thinking how come you’re gonna hate a winner, most wins take place because everybody collapses and one guy plows on to the end no matter what. So a true winner always needs recognition.

But then you had to mention Cynk over Tom Watson… 😭

I don’t even have to close my eyes to see Watson’s second go long and his feeble third and …..

I was really wanting him to win so sure, I was disappointed in the outcome but there is nothing personally offensive about Stewart Cink and he won fair and square - seems like the thread is more about “who can’t you stand that won a golf tournament”.

I was actually for Westwood in the 2009 Open because I thought he deserved a major more than anyone at the time and he had a great chance but went for a long putt on the last hole chasing a birdie and ended up three-putting when two putts would have made a playoff he'd have a good chance of winning.

I was young enough when Watson did what he did and was precious about golf to my friends, I didn't really want a 59-year-old winning a tournament, because it would propagate that golf was an old man's sport "didn't a 59yo win? How athletic can it be?"

As I got older though I appreciated that achievement of Watson and look back at it differently. I also look back on Westwood differently 1) he didn't have it in him mentally to win a major, choked the big moments and probably would have lost to Cink anyway 2) he's shown his true colours past few years with LIV. Cink is also a good player who deserved a major a lot more than many of the winners in the 2000s. 8 PGA Tour wins, top 10 in the world player on his day. Seems like a nice guy. But still by far the best outcome was Tom Watson winning.
