Versatile old 5 wood: SIM, TSi3, UW, etc?

Recommended Posts

I’m playing around with the top end of my bag. I currently have a 917 5 wood. It’s very spiny, and almost like a 6 wood. I’m replacing my 3 wood with a BRNR and 4 iron with a Mizuno Hi Fli.

I would like a stronger flighted 5 wood. How do the SIM Ti, TSi3, and original UW compare? Both for launch and versatility?

thanks!

Depending on what you want out of it, but the OG stealth plus 5wood is impressive as well.  Versatile and can be really long if you need it to be.

Another one that still keeps up with ball speed is ts3.  One of my favorites I ever played because it sits very square and is very smooth off the deck and easy to launch.

I tend to like a 3 wood off the tee and 5 wood that is easier from the deck but still can keep up with length.

SIM ti.  It's really hot(no pun intended), low spin and is deadly off the tee.   UW is good too but will launch lower and it may spin less depending on loft and your delivery into the ball.  TSi3 spun the most outta the bunch and was the shortest.

UW sounds spot on. I actually found it a little too piercing w the stock hzrdus smoke black, despite playing gen 4 black in my other woods. Put a kaili blue in it and it’s been perfect for my needs. I only tried the og sim ti in 3 wood, but didn’t really like hitting it from the deck. I am in the minority who prefer the sim 2 ti over the og though, so ymmv. Personally I want my 5 wood slot to be able to launch one a little higher from deck if need be, but still be capable of that lower spin piercing roller off the tee.

Had/have the Callaway UW 17 degree for the past several seasons, liked it but haven't fallen in love with it. Found a Sim 2 Ti 5W w/ Ventus Black 7x this offseason that I've been really happy with thus far - overall I would say distance is a push between the two (225 to 235 generally) which surprised me, this 5w is every bit as long as the old 15 deg 3W I had previously.

The 5W definitely flights higher than the UW, though oddly I've found the 5W easier to hit off the deck. I've never been a big TM guy, but this frames the ball really nicely and has some serious jump off the face, genuinely impressed thus far.

+1 to the SIM Ti recommendations, as well as any of the titanium body/steel sole'd fairways. The 900 series Titleist fairways are higher CG like most steel fairways are.

Webb Simpson's 913 here has a wear mark that is centered basically right where the sweet spot is, between the 4th and 5th groove. Anything struck lower than that will spin up, so the quickest way to lower spin at the same loft is to lower CG, enter the recommendations above. Those fairways have a sweet spot much lower on the head, reducing or eliminating the "spin up" of a lower strike.

I'm a big fan of the current iteration of the 17 deg UW. Could not get along with the Hzrdus shaft from the previous model, but the stock MMT 80 shaft is way more lively for me. Hit down on it to get a bit more spin, and shallow it out with less AOA and it's lower spin penetrating flight. Suits my eye better off the fairway compared to a traditional wood. Replaced my Aerojet 3W and 5W combo with the UW.

Haven't tried the others, so apologies for not giving a comparison.

Really happy with BRNR and UW 19* combo - UW 19* is definitely hot, and for me is about 4 wood distance.  Its going to make me need something hotter in the 4i slot.  I like your FliHi 4 idea - this should make for good gapping.

If you want something that launches higher and spins more then 5 metal.  UW will launch lower and spin less at the same loft in most cases.  Really depends on the courses you play as well.
