Luke Donald wasn’t the best player, but he was indeed very very good.

He was even #1 during Tiger's era.  I think that in itself is an accomplishment.  His iron play was superb.  Sand saves like no other.  I think he kinda lost his ways when he tried to get longer off the tee.  I used to wear Mizuno visors and play Mizuno irons because of him.  He's one of few very accomplished players from the Big Ten, the other being Steve Stricker.  Still root for him when I see him in the field every now and then.

He could never hit his driver far or even very straight. Odd combination and even his skills elsewhere couldn't keep him at the top with those issues.

Forgot about good old Jug McSpaden.

I just looked him up.  Impressive record.  One runner-up and twelve top tens in the majors, and seventeens wins on the PGA Tour.  Harry Cooper's record is better, though.

I was thinking of the old-time golfers, way back in the early years of golf, like the John Ball era.  I do not know if any of those old crones even competed in majors back before they were deemed majors.  Thanks to this thread, I am now aware of the old-timers who could play.

I agree it's either Monte or Westwood.  However, I will go with Monte as greatest w/o a major....because...it just wasn't that big of a surprise to see Westwood's short game/putting break down when the pressure was high.  I don't have stats to back it up, but I'd guess they are out there to support what my memory recalls.  Agree...disagree?

Lots of good reasons have been given why Westwood and Montgomery fit into the best to never have won a major moniker. I would also throw in one of the 59 shooters who has a spectacular swing, had a great game in general (and still has a decent game): Stuart Appleby.

Some people may not like the statement I am going to make, but : the major tournaments are overrated. All four of the men's majors have been won (and will continue to be won) by no name flash in the pans that win the major, and then nothing else the rest of their career (or maybe a few small additional tournaments at best) dropping off the radar. Anyone who has earned a tour card or worked their way into a field (excluding some sponsor invites) could have an on week where their timing and compensations synch up, and they get lucky bounces, and putts get lucky and fall in from low percentage distances and directions.

We all can probably recall seeing a tournament where someone got lucky and holed a shot from a fairway, chipped in, holed a bunker shot, or sunk an extremely low percentage put to beat the better player that probably should have won the event.

This week the US Open may prove to be one of those weeks if greens are too fast and unreceptive, and unlucky and lucky bounces come into play leading to bad luck and good luck of lies off the greens...

Name one golf tournament that does not have a handful of winners who are/were "no names".  Even the Sentry, which requires you to win the year before was won by Chris Kirk, not exactly a "no name" but pretty close.  He won last year in a playoff at Honda and before that it was 8 years since his last win.

Appleby was pretty good for 5 years, even won the Sentry 3 years in a row....impressive.  The problem with Westwood or Monty having a claim on BPWAM, is Lee only won twice on PGAT and Monty never.   So you can hardly be "best player" when you only win on the "other" tour.

Setting aside the guys from the wooden days, Kenny Perry and Steve Stricker come to mind as two guys who won a lot on PGAT, but no majors.

I don't think many are going to sign up for acting as though Euro Tour wins don't hold any merit in this discussion or aren't worth considering regarding the amount of skill/talent a player had.
