Has anyone experimented with a second higher loft driver in place of 3 wood?

Finding a 5-wood that really works for me has totally messed up my bag setup, haha. I hit my 5-wood so well that I basically don't hit 3/4 wood anymore, and I am even pulling 5-wood off the tee on a lot of holes. It's going 220-230 dead straight, and that's a lot better than 260 in the trees.

My thinking for the last few weeks has been to put a mini driver or deep-faced 3-wood in between my driver and 5-wood, as a more reliable tee option. The goal would be to get closer to the consistency of my 5-wood, but squeeze out another 20-30 yards of distance. After demoing tons of different 3-wood and mini driver options over the past couple weeks, I'm not convinced that I have the swing to make any of these clubs really work for me. None of them are forgiving enough, and I end up just as inconsistent as driver.

Now I'm thinking a fun experiment will be cutting down my old Cleveland Classic to 43" or 43.5", lofting it up to 11.5 or 12 degrees, and adding lead to the head. Should still be way more forgiving than any 3-wood, and theoretically should be easier to hit on the screws. I hit my 5-wood well enough that I don't really need anything else from the deck right now, it will only get me into trouble. Gonna try it out.

Im in the same boat in a way or similar i guess. Recently got a 3HL stealth 16.5 and cut it 5 wood length and its just ez mode. I too have been playing a 3 wood length driver head and am play testing a new triple diamond ls head in my tour ad 3 wood shaft as well as my regular driver. Im gona have a tough decision coming up with the top end of the bag. I honestly may just keep the two driver plus 3/5 wood and rock irons the rest of the way!

PING Rapture 3 wood (original).  14degrees. deep 227cc head, I play mine at 44".  Cheap on used market.  Not easy on the fairway, but I carry a 5 wood for that.

Dan Drake said it best... Don't be shy about using a 2nd driver if it helps you lower your score.

A good fit fairway wood is tough to find.  I played for several years going, Driver, 2H, 4H... I hit my driver well, accurate, so approach shots were the struggle.  Only 2 3 woods I can hit off the tee with distance and off the deck are GBB Epic SZ and Rogue ST LS.

Callaway had a few driver options around the time of the original Epic that all used the same weights including a ladies line that had higher lofts. The fusion came with a 5g weights in the back and you could probably find a 15-20.

Another option is a 3w at 42" length if you haven't tried that.

Thank you for the kind words!

Add to that, you are onto it now with your 3rd note there.  A "Max" type of driver head with more loft, more draw bias, and adjustable weights should be something that a big contingent of golfers look at utilizing.

I guess the main point is that there are now numerous different types of clubs that can fit into your 2nd spot in the bag, and it's silly to just blindly assume that a "3w" is going to be the one that helps you shoot the lowest scores.  2nd 460cc driver, mini driver, fairway wood, low loft hybrid, low loft driving iron, all are in play if you really are looking to optimize your bag setup for your game and the courses you most often play!

I think the first reply perfectly answers why more people don’t do it. Nobody wants to be “weird”.
This is probably why people like the mini drivers, they can have two drivers without feeling like a weirdo. And Taylormade is making it cool 😎

Do whatever works! Having a few tee options to position yourself where you need to is huge, and if 2 drivers get you there then who cares?!

I'm really thinking these mini drivers might just make a lot of sense.  I Remember when people thought a 5 wood was questionable and a 7 wood was laughable to many folks.  Look at how many Tour bags they are in now.  A shorter 13.5 degree mini for days when there is no time for warmup, or the big dog is simply having a bad day,  or for really narrow fairways should make a lot more sense than relying on a much smaller 3 wood to be a reliable fairway finder.  The new Smoke Mini is tempting me as a 3 wood replacement.

I've cut down driver shafts before, but the issue I always had was when cut down significantly, the lie angle becomes too upright, leading to wayward balls, and swing adjustments to try to correct the issue. I would go Mini.

Doesn't the lie angle get flatter?

I remember when mini-driver proponents like me were met with ridicule, bordering on rage, in these comments just a few years ago, and now mini-drivers are flying off the shelves. Probably some of those early critics have them in their bags. 😆

Funny how people's minds change. [I had my own epiphany this year about hybrids, which I had dismissed for the longest time.]

But the bottom line is that there are a million ways to configure the top of our bags, and they all have plusses and minuses. I have played Driver-Mini, Driver-Driver, Mini-Mini, Driver-3w, Mini-3w, and probably others. All were functional, none were perfect.

If you can play a short-shafted driver (or a Mini) and it serves as a "thriver" off the tee, OR if you want a second driver to create different launch or shot-shape conditions, do it! Given how critical driving is, why not? But if you're using 3w a lot, or if you are a dead-eye with your standard driver, then it's probably a pointless addition.

The Ping guy (Marty Jertson) said he can only hit his regular driver on 4 holes on his course.  And that long hitters rarely need a 3 wood off the turf because the par fives are not that long for them.  Therefore that spot in the bag is better filled with a second driver that’s shorter and more accurate.

This. It’s a long players setup.  And that can include super seniors  playing from  the up tee. Because holes get tight.  And 3 wood isn’t always enough.  46 inch driver down to 43 is probably a 50 yard gap for me. In carry. Probably 30 in total comparison.  But the dispersion is night and day.  I could probably hit every fairway for days with the short one. But it will hurt you on wide par 5 holes. This is why 2 woods , etc are popular.  Modern driver doesn’t fit most local courses for long hitters.

Interesting. I have the rogue st ls 4w. It’s a bomber when I time it properly but very susceptible to hooks on me (probably because I set this up for more off the deck with a softer shaft or my technique, have to feel a very flat left wrist at impact). I have debated a shorter second driver as the 4w is mainly a second tee option.

edit: didn’t buy but just added a epic max 12° on CPO and then two Denali black 6.5 (60 and 70) to put in driver and short driver. Doubt I actually do it but it’s fun to think about

Ive been thinking about my bag lately…. Not necessarily two drivers but a mini driver at 13.5 really makes a ton of sense for me. I recently lost my custom wedgeworks 58 T grind… left it behind and nobody ever turned it in… 😠. Then I got to thinking and I hardly EVER use it. Maybe once a round. And even then, was it necessary? Probably not. Even more so, 3 wood is a tee club for me because I usually have less than that most par 5s. When I do have a long par 5, its usually dead into a pretty stiff breeze, where heck I might as well hit driver (or mini) off the deck to keep it low. I think the added forgiveness over a 3 wood off a tee would be a big boost.

I think the plan is to go driver, mini at 13.5, then 5 wood AND  driving iron. 5 wood would be an approach club for par 5s, long par 3s. Mini and driving iron off the the tee clubs. If i did decide to add a lob, id take out either driving iron or 5 wood.
