Spin higher with long irons, lower with short irons

Recommended Posts

spacer.pngSo I've been trying to lower the spin on my long irons and I got shots with my 4 through 9 iron.

I am using a Bushnell launch pro (gc3) launch monitor - I am completely lost as to what to do with these numbers, spin is lower with my short irons and higher with my long irons.

Is this some type of data artifact or problem with the launch monitor?

You are not delivering the club to the ball in a consistently good manner.  You might think the contact is decent (it's likely not as good as you think) and the club is likely delofted (shut) in a number of them.  In a nutshell, your ball striking is not good.  It could be a whole host of things.

I will have to go back and do it again recording smash factor, but the numbers show a consistent trend of increasing launch angle as expected with shorter irons and lower spin - that doesn't make much sense.

Your launch is still a tad to very high for all irons though.

I agree with you there, I am working on my weight transfer to get more shaft lean at impact.

Just trying to make sense of the reverse trend of the spin numbers

Are you sure you aren't hitting the short irons higher on the face? It's easy to do off a mat.

Just another guy trying (for some reason) to chase shaft lean.  Likely a dozen other thing that are more important than that.

Look at the break point with your 7i. You go from a 16* with the 6i launch to 25* with the 7i. You're flipping the 7-9i through impact that you don't do (as much) with your longer irons. For reference, PGAT average launch angle for a 7i is 16* these days.

And the ladies arent much higher

What should I work on to lower my launch angle?

If I'm flipping through impact then I need more forward shaft lean, right?

I'm all ears and just asking for advice - don't want to trouble you too much

You need to figure out what in your backswing maybe even setup is causing you to have to flip or have inconsistent contact.

Shaft clean will take care of itself.

More forward shift of the lower body. You seem to keep it perfectly centered. You may want to feel like your lead hip and shoulder are stacked directly on top of your lead foot (which will feel extreme until you can internalize it). Also a bit more thoracic extension (proud chest) in the backswing to prevent the upper body from swaying off the ball so much.

Posting a DTL video as well may help.

But it seems like you are following instructors that push forward shaft lean and side tilting at address.  I don't agree with de-lofting the club to gain more distance because a)it's unnecessary on the principle that each club has it's own static loft that should be used and b)it complicates swing mechanics and produces inconsistent results because the dynamic loft is lower than the static loft.  As for side tilting for ground shots I think it's counter-productive when faced with uneven lies.  The shoulder plane should match the terrain plane to ensure clean contact.

Some people do tinker with their swings to create specialty shots, but marketing it to beginners and intermediates only confuses them.  Stock shots with a basic setup is what most people should seek.

Turn looks a little flat too.
