Golf balls with location chips?

So how long until we have a golf ball with some sort of bluetooth or similar tech with a chip in it and you can use your app on your phone to "find my ball?" The micro tech is very close, if not already there.

I play with a few guys I'd gladly buy a dozen for as we seem to have too many Easter egg hunts when I play with with them, even on par 3s. 🤣

That tech is already being used. Top Golf has sensor chips implanted in their golf balls. No doubt other manufacturers could do this as well. The big question would be if the bow ties at the usga would give it the green light.

As long as the RFID dot or whatever could be centered in the ball as to not cause excess oscillation and/or the weight of it not matter much in that regard if it IS off-center - and the signal could penetrate the cores of the ball PLUS reach your phone from 60 feet or so away so you can find it - it could be done.

It's been done in the past.  IIRC they were "Radar" balls.  I'm thinking it was around 2006 or so.

The commercial for it showed a guy with a detector asking other golfers at the edge of the woods if they had seen his ball.  They replied no but then the detector starts really beeping the closer it's held to the pocket of one of the guys in the woods.  Then one of the other golfers gives him the lost ball and gives a feeble excuse.

Waste of money and effort.  Even if you did have one, it wouldn't last.  Even the best ball looks like crud after a few rounds and is junk because all the dimples are worn down.  That is IF you can keep one in play for that long.  One water hazard and you are done with it.

Guys cry over losing a $1 ball.  Just imagine the horror of losing a $50 ball.

Last part nails it. I work 9 to 5 in tech, outside of work I dont need tech like this to waste my money on!

I think RFID is too short-range IMHO. And I don't know if RFID has directional capability.

It appears BT has some directional finding capability, but that requires some level of actively powered device, which means you not only need to put a chip in the center of the ball but you also need a battery.

I suppose that you don't need charging capability... It sounds like it might be similar to an Apple Airtag which uses a small coin cell (CR2032) battery which has about a 1 year lifespan. For a golf ball I'd assume that a fixed battery that isn't replaceable is fine as you might lose it OB or in water where it's not retrievable in a much shorter span of time, or take it out of play due to damage. So the tech is fine--chip and a battery.

So you need a BT chip and a battery, embedded inside the ball in such a way that it doesn't get destroyed by the compression of impact and doesn't otherwise affect the performance of the ball. And then you have to make it cheap enough to be commercially viable.

Seems like a pretty difficult engineering and economic challenge to solve.
