I think Chicago has good public golf.

Got to agree there. It’s amazing how many really nice courses are with in an hour of me.

All things considered, which big cities are best for golf? Both public and private

I am in Dallas and I personally think we have one of the worst

I live in DFW area and it's middle of the road IMO.  Nothing great for sure but several decent public courses and cost/access is way better than a lot of big cities. I travel a lot for work and compared to Seattle, Atlanta, DC, LA, NY, and Houston, our area has a lot more to offer and is a bargain compared to those areas.

Private has some good options but they will cost $$$$ and you need connections.

Having experienced golf throughout the US extensively I can tell you the answer in regards to public golf is simple on both accounts.  Best is Chicago metro and worst is Los Angeles with 0 contest.  Second or third worst cities are so far ahead of LA it is not even funny.

Chicago has great golf, and New Orleans has the worst golf in my opinion.

Monterey peninsula (Pebble, Spyglass, Spanish Bay, Monterey Peninsula x2, Cypress, Poppy Hills) is so solid. San Francisco has a decent muni (Harding Park) and many great private courses (SFGC, Olympic Club x2, Lake Merced) surrounding Lake Merced with Cal Club nearby

Beat me to it, but you left out one of the best - Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz.

Los Angeles has got to be in the top 3 for the worst - courses are over crowded, have mediocre conditions, slow pace of play, and impossible to get to.  include the recent tee time issues with brokers buying all of the times and reselling (LA County Parks could not care less) and it's really bad.  I lived in Philadelphia area and it was 100% better for public golf compared to here even with the 5-6 month golf season.

The question asked for cities.  If you add Pasatiempo (Santa Cruz) to Monterey Peninsula (several cities) and then also add San Francisco (75 miles from Monterey).. that's a huge area.  Lots of great golf... but is this a fair response?

I grew up in LA and all I have to say is.. this is very sadly right on.  LA is horrible.

Monterey/Pebble Beach have three of the best golf courses in the US (Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, and Spyglass HIll), two exceptional private courses in Monterey Peninsula CC Shore and Dune Courses, and two additional very solid courses in Poppy Hills and Spanish Bay.  And the quirky muni Pacific Grove Golf Links, the back nine runs out right along the shores of the meeting of the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay.  All within about four miles of each other.  Pretty hard to beat that.

Except for San Francisco, which has iconic courses San Francisco Golf Club, Olympic Club, and Cal Club, as well as Lake Merced and Harding Park, all within a few miles of each other.

When I moved here I was concerned what the golf situation would be like. I have like 10 decent public with 30 min and like 30 within an hour. It's shocking how much golf there actually is.

City I was in before was Tucson. Sneaky good place for golf. Plenty of courses and you can get good rates every where if you know where to look.

Sheboygan, WI  or Milwaukee if you don’t fly into Kohler.  Great golf all over the place (public and private), best in fall when the leaves are changing color

I was going to say the area encompassing Kohler, Erin HIlls and Sand Valley, but geez the season is so short.  I can’t imagine not being able to play golf year round.

Disagree with Los Angeles.  When I lived in LA I admittedly drove up to Rustic Canyon for most of my golf and while it's a drive it's hard to beat the golf (is within the hour that people are quoting for Chicago).  Additionally, I played Rancho Park quite a bit and was happy there.  You also have places like Los Verdes, Grifith Park and Santa Anita (which has some fun character).

I think it all kind of depends on what your definition of a city is.  If you consider something like Long Island/Hamptons for NYC I'm going with NYC for best, but do agree Chicago is also pretty good.  For worst I'd agree that New Orleans really doesn't have any great golf.  Not sure you can call Anchorage or Fairbanks cities, but they don't have much golf.

I'm moving to DC here soon and not so excited about the golf.  I'm currently living in CO Springs and for the population it's disappointing.  I'll repeatedly say the old rust belt cities that are economically past their prime are the most under rated for golf.  I loved my golf experiences in the Ohio "cities" of Dayton, Columbus and Cleveland/Akron.
