At a loss - Help me with my driver setup

Recommended Posts

As the title says, I’m at a complete loss with my driver. Been fighting it for months, got refit, and still something doesn’t feel right.

I started at club champion when I was fit into the Ping LST 9degree set standard with a Fujikura Motore X F1 7. After about 8 months, it felt to heavy and I never settled into it so I turned to True Spec and went into a Graphite Design Tour AD True Spec Version blue 65x. Again, started out okay but never felt right.

Found a trackman today and hit all balls to get data to work with. Hit every shot with the current Srixon XV and here are the results:

Driver

- 27 shots.
- Avg speed 108.
- Avg ball speed 154.
- Avg spin 4580

- Avg launch angle 13.5

- Avg attack angle -2.5

- Avg face angle -2.4

- Avg club path -4

7 iron for reference was

- 11 shots

- Avg speed 93

- Avg ball speed 123

- Avg spin 7039

A buddy of mine suggested I try something that resembles my Callaway Great Big Bertha 3wood with a project x even flow blue 6.5 75g (favorite stick in the bag which ironically I self fit using other data on this forum many years ago).

Hoping the crowdsource that is the GolfWRX community can help me out with suggestions for a driver shaft before I lose all confidence in my swing.

Ok, so what do your misses look like? Spin numbers on your driver are EXTREMELY high. In addition, your ball speed and efficiency is very low as well. Given that you are in pretty low spinning head, there are only a few things that can cause that:

1 Face contact is low and heel side

2 Your attack angle is too steep

3 Your clubface is open at impact and/or your path is too much out to in.

4 A combination of all of the above.

Unfortunately there isn’t much adjusting of a club that will help. First thing I would recommend is to tee the ball up higher, move the ball more forward in your stance, and feel like you are swinging up on the ball. Next, check to make sure your shoulders, hips, and feet are all parallel to your target. Sometimes if the shoulders get too open it can lead to an excessive out to in path. Hopefully this will get your face contact higher on the club, get your attack angle higher, and give you more time to square the club face. This will give you more ball speed, less spin, and a straighter spin axis. Next drill I would recommend is to put your headcover on the ground about 2ft in front of your driver and about 1ft outside the target line. Try to get the feel of trying to hit your headcover in your follow through. This will get your club path corrected.

What’s wrong with the current shaft? If it’s also too heavy I’d start with a lighter weight in the rear.
Attack angle, and launch angle would help people offer more educated suggestions.

Given that he was originally fit at CC there’s a very good chance the swingweight was VERY heavy as the adapter they use adds lots of weight to the head. I’ve seen some builds done from them at D9….. You’re right about using a lighter head weight given that Ping heads are already heavier than most, that may well be the issue with his feel.

Definitely know some of this is me and my swing. Misses right now are mostly right as I am sure you can tell from the numbers. Been working the drills above and others for months (appreciate the reminder on the shoulders/hips though) and not seeing much improvement which lead me to look into this for some clarity that the club is right for me.

It may sound oversimplifying, but try moving a little further away from the ball and address the ball on the toe of the club. I have a bad habit that pops up every now and then where I struggle hitting it off the toe. If I move closer to the ball, and address it off the heel my contact moves back to the middle.
‘As far as the club, it is pretty fade biased, so that can be making it worse. Maybe try a driver that’s more upright and maybe a bit draw biased. A very underrated driver is the PXG Black Ops. You can adjust loft, lie, and move the weights to move CG to influence flight pattern based on strike. It’s very low spin for such a forgiving driver. Do you have a PXG store near you?

TXG did a review on the Black Ops driver. Mikey is a chronic heel banger. Watch the video and see how much it helped him.

Where exactly is your impact pattern on the face?  It all starts from there

Agreed. You can't launch a driver at a reasonable 13.5* and spin it at 4,500 without either severe strike issues (very low on the face) or complete misreads on those spin numbers. The very poor efficiency (low ball speed for that swing speed) supports the strike issues, but we need to see them to be sure. Being 2* down and 4* from the outside isn't ideal, but it wouldn't create this bad an issue alone. The dynamic loft you'd need to be delivering to produce 4,500 spin with a center strike would have your launch WAY higher than 13*.

I agree, this is mostly a impact location issue, and the OP is the closest to figure that out by using foot-spray or a whiteboard pen, but the question is, WHY is his impact that low on the face? Is he trying to hit up on it?

To the OP.
Please give me TOTAL wgt on your driver, and TOTAL wgt on your PW
Then i need to know carry for your driver, and carry for your PW

In bags where both the irons and driver is fitted and works as they should, we will see this numbers
PW carry x 2 = Driver carry
PW total wgt x 0.7 = Driver total wgt

The "tolerances" here is very tight, and in the area of 1 to 1.5%
If your drivers TW is outside of those numbers, you will both have found ONE reason for why, and what direction to go
