Wedge set on a budget?

CGray97

Recommended Posts

Looking into picking up a wedge set or atleast a 52 and 56 degree as I don't plan to play a 60 just yet. I've been playing my old worn out Wilson harmonized SW which I believe is 56 but it's time to upgrade as the face isn't what it once was. Would like to stay around 100 but have a little wiggle room. Maltby maybe? Looking for some suggestions.

Maltby is about as cheap as you can get.

I'll throw in a recommendation for lazrus wedges. You can get a full set of 52,56,60 or 50,54,58 for 150 ish.

If you want to go a more customizable route, then it'd be hard to beat the aforementioned sub70.

If you're looking for just a single wedge with no customizable parts going a previous generation Cleveland is my recommendation.

Would they be an upgrade from Wilson in your opinion?

Definitely an upgrade from a worn out Wilson. Switching wedges among almost all manufacturers is mostly a lateral move, as far as quality is concerned. Any differences are more a matter of personal preference than anything.

As others have said, The Kirkland set is a good bargain. Hard to beat 3 wedges for $170. If you’re wanting a bit higher quality Sub70 at $105ea are very good.

I hate paying new prices for wedges, I always scan used sections for deals.   Current Cleveland Tour Rack wedges I picked up virtually new for $99/club last year.   Found a 54 and 58 this spring of last year's RTX wedges in the used rack, unhit, for $69/club.  Guy in the store said somebody came in with them and said he won them in a raffle and just wanted to get rid of them.  They are my back ups.

I just went this route after I left my 60 on a green, and no one turned it in.

I was coming from Mizuno T7s which I enjoyed very much.

Moving to the Lazrus wedges they look nice, the Rainbow finish is beautiful to my eyes.

However, the grips are extremely thin.  There is zero pre work leading edge, and for me that seems to be bad. (I don't know much about wedges I just play what looks good usually). This is the first time I've noticed technology are design having a direct impact on my ability around the greens. (I'm a garbage golfer take that with a grain of salt)

Additionally, the clubs are very... Head heavy in my opinion.  They very much feel like the head weight over powers the shaft and grip weight.

I've played 1 round with them so far, and have been disappointed.  I'm trying to not give up on them before at least 1 more round, and I'm sure they work just fine for plenty of golfers, I just think the design can be potentially troublesome for anyone like me.

When I made contact, they felt fine, spin fine, flew fine.  It's probably just an adjustment period or feel ill need to get used to as they feel night and day from my Mizuno's from a swinging aspect, but wanted to share.

For what it's worth, these are the newest Lazrus release, that are now tournament approved.  I think they're named slightly differently "V Milled" or something with PGA approved grooves etc, which the previous models did not have, which steered some people away.

If I could have my money back and go with all alternative options I would probably leave Maltby for value, or Mizuno T24 for comfort and ease of mind, but the price tag is tough to swallow.

And then I did black paint fill to clean them up.

I really enjoyed my Lazrus 52/56. I upgraded to the Haywood Signature, but I could game the Lazrus again easy.

Solid hybrids, too.

I did see a youtuber from the UK do a video on those wedges from Lazrus and the results were good.

@CGray97 - friend, allow me to introduce you to your new best friend, Callaway Pre-Owned.  Reportedly over 1 million clubs in inventory.

https://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/wedges/by-family/jaws/

Jaws Raw are some of the best wedges I've ever played and they can be had right now for $70-90.

Edit: guessing you meant $100 for the set.  In either case, the site has a lot of deals.  I’ve regularly seen wedges in clearance going for less than $50.

New Level or Sub70.  Both DTC make high quality forged wedges.  I have a Miura Tour HB and New Level SPN M grind wedge and actually prefer the New Level as it feels slightly softer.
